xServe woes...

Ive been holding back on fixing some issues with our xServe.
For the past year we've been having issues with permissions, slow transfer rates and the server trying to reach apple update a million times a day (so claims our IT folks).
Its an older PowerPC xServe running Leopard Server.
Would it make sense to re-install the OS again (2nd time) to purge any oddities e.g. users losing their privilidges etc...
No budget to buy MacIntel one


Any tips would be great!

Any tips on that? Currently running an xServe RAID off FC. Tried to use Disk Util and the verify/repair perm disk is greyed out.
I ran the verify and it threw a ton of errors at me Basically it stated that it cant verify. The errors are:
incorrect number of attributes
incorrent number of Access Controls.

I did try the main HD and at least go the option to verify/repair perm disk.
That might take eons till I get results.

Currently running OSX Leopard Server 10.5.6.

Try booting off the installer disc to run a disc/permissions repair. This is only needed for your boot drive.

Based on limited experience with Xserve RAID units I don't believe you should even need to do a permissions check on that unit. However you may need to rebuild the RAID. Have you checked it to see if any drives are reporting problems? Check the “Using RAID Admin and Disk Utility” manual on the CD that came with your system.

Yeah, but there is only about $100 in cost savings between a base line MP and the Xserve. As soon as you add a Fibre Channel card ($600 for a Dual channel 4Gb) to either one and OS X server to the MP ($499) the benefit of using an Xserve in the same rack as your RAIDs becomes rather evident.

Do the system/server logs show anything? Is the network running clean any errors on the ethernet interface?


EDIT: Have you checked the array status is it healthy?
