just got my macbook air last week and i love it to death. long time windows user and i dont think i will ever turn back. anyway i downloaded Xslimmer and i was wondering what apps to remove. im not too familar with a lot of the apps on the macbook so im not sure what it needs and what it doesnt. i used the xslimmer genie to bring up the apps, can i remove any of the apps with out ruining anything?

just a little info on what i will be using the macbook for, word processing, mail, basic web browsing, itunes, and a little bit of photos.

a list of major space saving apps and what they are used for would really help me.

thanks guys, look forward to becoming a regular to the forums.

Xslimmer removes the PPC binaries from applications if you have an Intel Mac or the Intel binaries from apps if you have a PPC Mac. it also removes all the languages other than your default which can be enabled in the preferences.

however some apps dont work properly after their PPC/Intel code is striped out. these apps are backlisted by Xslimmer and are untouched.

after the app genie has found all your apps just click "Slim!" and it will do its work. the backlisted apps will have a black progress bar and not be slimmed.

also to save even more space you might want to consider reinstalling OS X and leaving out the extra languages, asian fonts, printer drivers and maybe Garage Band loops if you wont be using them. use the guide here.

Other than the blacklisted apps, I haven't found any of the core apps lose functionality after removing PPC version and extra languages.

Remember, if something stops working or doesn't work properly, you can always just reinstall it, and then blacklist that app yourself in XSlimmer, so you don't accidently try and slim it in the future!

Yeah just open up applications, drag the whole lot in, the ones that are important will be blacklisted.

GREAT GREAT program. Just run the GENIE, and it does everything for you. Totally a NO BRAINER app that does the job, and leaves you with a LOT of space that would otherwise be housing Swedish and Swahili .. how CAN one live without those>>> :D:cool:

Beats the heck out of those REINSTALL things, where you have to have two pages of instructions, and manually do an hours worth of click here, delete that....this is literally a ONE click to find, and ONE click to DO program.

Love it!

Just signed up to this forum a few days back as I was lurking in here prior to purchasing my first Macbook (and an Air at that!).

I saw these tips about reinstalling Leopard, but I was on holiday when I bought the laptop (taking advantage of the good $/£ exchange rate) and couldn't be bothered to wait until I got home before I used it. Now I'm home I don't want to reinstall OSX as I've already put a lot of utils/apps on here...

But what I did notice, is that there's tools to remove the excess languages, and also you can just delete the printer drivers and GB loops from the relevant folders if you want to? Is it really necessary to do a complete clean install?

I did the complete reinstall and followed the directions, worked great and I don't have that extra junk on my AIR now. Garage band, printer drivers, other langs, etc...

Might try this too

OK, bought the program and ran the Genie. Took out 1.16GB, within 66 different apps, of unused files - so that seams good. I could swear the programs load 2-3x faster now. Even if its in my head - its all good!

Is this possible?

Wouldn't be surprised if it made things a little faster. Not sure how much though. At the very least the program doesn't have to load language files it'll never use into memory.

worked like a charm, used the genie and it did everything for me. i appologize that i my thread probably didnt make too much sense as i thought Xslimmer completely removed the applications. i didnt know if only removed unused portions of the app. very cool program.

one more thing, since i was a long time windows user, how do you do disk clean ups and defrags on a mac?

No need to defrag!

And as for cleanups, there are many free programs that will help you clean caches, etc.

I like a program called Maintenance to clean caches and lots more. It's free too!

Definite thumbs up to Delocalizer. I also used an app called Monolingual. I'm sure there is overlap in functionality between the three, but I just uninstall the apps when they've finished their work, so it's no big deal. Monolingual is also free btw, and can be found on macupdate.
