not good that it infected that many people but its good not everyone was affected. thats why i got rid of win 7 for a ios device

If I'm reading the article correctly (only a slim chance of that)...the malware is a trojan, and requires user action to infect those systems that can be effected (apparently not OS X at this point.)

Did I get that right?

Yeah, but it can be more complicated if its run on a networked PC, because other machines can be affected. So lets say some small business has a basic office setup with a shared file server, fool #3 runs the file and the shared storage is now encrypted.

Right now cryptolocker is being distributed as bogus files disguised as mp3s and such and relies on windows itself to do its work. So its easier to defend against but if it happens to somehow get infected the result is a lot worse. And it seems a fair number of people have been infected.

The yahoo malware exploits a java vulnerability to infect a machine, so only people with java would be affected.
