yahoo sbc DSL downloads at 40kbps

i have SBC YAHOO DSL
i have MAC G4 POWERBOOK using OSX 10.2.6
i use IE 5.2 and SAFARI

my problem is that it DOWNLOADS at 40kbps and itll start at 1.5mbps - 3.0mbps, but then drops down and down and ends up at the speed of 40kbps.

i can view streaming video and stuff at 300kbps and will open pages alot faster than a 56k modem, but DOWNLOADING it ends up at 40kb.

so i have called sbc yahoo dsl and they have been giving me the run around saying to wait 10 days so they can optimize the line and ive waited the 10 days and no change.

what do i do? do i have a firewall up or some option up that allows me to start download speeds fast but cap it off at 40kb??
i dont think its the dsl line cause it begins with a fast download but ends up slow.
please help me. thanks.

That's about the download speed I've see for most DSL connections, plus you have to account for other factors such as distance from the CO, speed of the server you are downloading from, line noise/interferance, etc.

What speed DSL do you have? SBC dsl basic (the cheapest flavor) is 384 kilobits per second, the max speed you would see in you browsert would be ~46 Kilobytes per sec. The distance that you are from the intermet provider and the quality of your lines can also make a difference. Each byte is 8 bits, so a 56 kilobit modem can only achieve 7 kilobytes per second. Connection speeds are rated in kilobits per second, but within a browser you see the speed rated at kilobytes per second, so at ~40kilobytes D/L in a browser you are ~6x faster than dialup.

Streaming video/audio is rated in kilobits, so with 384 kilobit DSL you can watch 300 kilobit streaming movies (or listen to streaming audio).

Kilobits are abbreviated to kb, and kilobytes are abbreviated as KB.

If you are unsatisfied with the speeds that you are getting (6x faster than dialup) then you can call SBC and get your DSL upgraded to one of their faster flavors, such as 1.5 megabit, where your downloads would go approximately 190 kilobytes per second. (MUCH faster than dialup)

i think thats gonna be your speed my man. i have sbc dsl and it starts at 200 and drops to 150 and stays. if your thinking its just download speeds go to www.bandwidthplace.com and see what your speed is, that will tell you alot right there.
