Well, push notifications are different than something running and doing something on the device. Those are just coming from a push service like other notifications. You can disable notifications from an app as well in notification settings on the device.
Thanks for the reply. It's interesting to know that about notifications. I guess I assumed with cellular data off it wouldn't know there were any notifications to push while on cellular.
I don't take issue with the notifications.. more I just wanted to be sure it wasn't up to any shenanigans in the background. The whole FB app debacle leaves me wary.
The notifications are more of a system level service rather an app one--basically for the most part they all come in through the same path (Apple's push notification service) even though they can be for various different apps and services.
So while you have cellular data off for the app, the system itself still uses cellular service and gets notifications that way (unless you disabled cellular data as well, and you are not on something like WiFi either, in which case you shouldn't be getting notifications for anything basically, aside from maybe local notifications that some apps or services can have).
