Back before either pre-ordering, or when ordering meant a long wait, many people tried their luck by getting to an Apple or carrier store first thing when they opened. Lines formed the day before and earlier. Waiting in line was a social thing. Some in line and others would drive by and give status reports - e.g. 25 in line at 7 PM.

The threads were specific to a store, or sometimes to all the stores in a city.
