I have an old iMac 2010 27" i7, High Sierra + Windows 10.
It's a perfect computer and has always worked well over the years.

Over time I changed DVD player, CPU and GPU thermal paste, installed SSD ed a SSD thermal sensor, cleaned the fans several times and also cleaned the display which accumulated dust in the most superficial layers.

I have completely disassembled the computer several times over the years, so I know it very well.

For some time now I have noticed that the screen has changed hue to yellow, if it was barely visible before, now it is noticeable quite quickly.

I did a search on the net and the problem seems to be the coating of the backlight LEDs which is literally cooked and makes all the backlight yellow.

On ifixit I found these very explanatory photos:

another problem that I'm finding is that when it gets very hot the bottom left corner tends to become darker (not as dark as in this photo, but the flaw is barely visible)

and this is also a known problem and the solution would be to re-solder the connector come as in this photo found on the net:

Probably the best solution is to change the LED bars, because they cost less than 15 dollars.

Not having the time to get back to work on this imac, I'll try to calibrate the display with calibrite colorchecker to see if the situation improves and if I can postpone the intervention for the future, but sooner or later I'll have to do it.

This isn't my main work machine, but it's a real shame having to throw it away in the trash as the monitor no longer works.
The big screen and quad core i7 processor still make it a current machine for light work and its design is still beautiful, so I'll fix it as long as I can.

Have any of you had any experience with replacing the backlight on this imac?
Do you have any advice for me? thank you all.

You’ve definitely done your research.

I’ve done it before but the process is a lot of hassle. In my own personal experience I’ve found replacing the whole backlight assembly to be the easier task, however have been pushed to doing these processes before when out of spares.

Those processes are correct in fixing your issues your experiencing, for sure.
Usually I’ve replaced the yellowed reflective tape with either another set of reflective tape, or white electrical tape. Both have worked fine for me.

Just be wary on any dust and debris you’re exposing to the backlight layers, as it can be an absolute pain to clean out afterwards, and near impossible in some cases to get it completely clean again.

Hi @TwoH ,
Thank you for reply.

Electrical white tape is a good choice?
Or aluminium reflective tape is a better choice?

Thank you for your advices, I’ll remember them.
