I was all set to hit the buy button for a new Santa Rosa MBP.

Middle 15" 2.4

With all of the talk about slow response times (spinning rainbow disks), overkill Thermal Paste, extremely high heat problems, LCD screen problems, etc...

I'm beginning to wonder if this is the worst Revision A ever...

I wanted to buy it for audio recording.

Now I'm second guessing dropping $3000 (includes Apple Care and Tax) into one...

Honestly,

My last gen 2.33 MBP seemed faster, smoother, and 100% problem free. Im on my 3rd 2.4 MBP as the 1st two were filled with problems.

So far, #3 is great but no better than my last gen 2.33 - If I were you, I would go to an apple store to see if they still have some old 2.33's around. If they do, it will be sold at a discount as well.

If I could go back, I would of kept my 2.33. This Santa Rosa BS seems like a step backwards.

For example, the new LED display is NOT as nice as last gens displays. Many say they are so great but I just dont see it, and I have used both extensively now.

I have noticed more beach balls with the 2.4 and its slower at opening apps. The 2.33 was INSTANT. The 2.4 has some delays.

I can say that my 3rd one has the best display yet out of the three 2.4's I had. This one has NO yellow tinge and is pretty even as far as the backlighting goes. It's like the lottery. You may get a perfect one, you may not. To those who have the last model 2.33, you are not missing anything but 20-30 minutes of extra battery and the 4GB ram option.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have a 2.2Ghz MBP and it works great for me, boots in 22 seconds every time, no yellow tinge, no rainbow balls for me and i have had it since june 5 when they came out

Since this is a technical forum you'll hear lots of chat about problems, so the amount of problems the machines have will be quite exaggerated. Chances are, your new machine will be perfectly fine, and I hear that customer support is very nice, if you don't get a perfect machine right away.

Cust Serv nice?

I returned the 1st macbook pro to the apple store where I bought it. It had a warped case (actual protrusion by superdrive), the 1/3 yellow tinge and a VERY loose battery. After 15 minutes they decided to exchange for me, but he said he was only doing it because of the case problem.

2nd one he gave me had a cut seal, with a new seal taped over it on the box. I asked if it was a return and he said NO. I take it home and when I opened the box, the cloth that the MBP was in was WET. YES, WET. My buddy was there and were were freaking out as to why it would be wet. I took the MBP out and the top of the case was wet with water drops in it. Why, I have no idea.

I opened it and it had a smudge on the screen. Looks like a return to me I said, but as long as it was fine, no problem. I noticed it did not shut very well, much looser than #1. The screen had a yellow tinge but not as bad as #1. I was going to keep it until it froze and went to a black screen with text scrolling.

It took me 20 minutes to get it to boot up after several restart attempts. WHen I did get it, I reformatted and reinstalled everything. Next morning my return key fell off out of the blue. Put it back on and it fell off 20 min later. Froze up again and went to the black screen. I decided to pack it up ad take it back once more.

Keep in mind, over the past 7 years I have bought maybe 20 macs, and about 10 from this store. Powerbooks, Ibooks, Imacs, Powermacs, macbooks and macbook pros.

They know me there.

WHen I returned my 2nd macbook pro 2.4, the manager did NOT want to exchange it. He said he couldn't replicate the black screen problem. Blamed it on my "environment" whatever that meant, and suggested I make an apt for 48 hours later to get it looked at. I informed him I was in day 2 of my 14 day exchange/return privelage and he got defensive "Im here to help you man, relax" - "how can I replicate this problem?"

I told him I had no idea as it was random both times. The return key was put back on again by him as well. Also informed him of the double seal on the package and he said it could not of been a return. BS.

After 15 minutes I demanded an exchange and said it would not be "looked at"

he went back and got another one and had a not so happy look on his face. He processed the transaction and told me if #3 was defective there would be no exchange - only a genius appt to repair it. I once again informed him I would be in my 14 days and if it had defects within that 14 days it is not a reapir issue but a return issue. I told him I would take a refund if #3 was bad. He just looked at me and didnt say a word.

I walked out feeling tired and bitter. It was not a pleasant experience and I am sure they are trained to make you feel bad for returning a defective item. Its ridiculous.

So far #3 is great but if it has any problems in the next 14 days, I will take it back and get my refund and find a 2.33 from the last gen (I had one and it was perfect)

Anyway, the Apple store is cool, and I love Apple products but they are not so nice when you want to return something. They do try to get out of it.

Also, when I returned #2, there were FOUR others in line returning defective MBP's and a defect on the counter. Says something right there.

Good luck.

Gotta say I all around love my new MBP no beach balls apps run instantly and as far as im concerned a perfect display (I dont have a old C2D to compare it to though). Also I noticed the hissing/crackling went away after I installed 10.4.10 with my headphones!

I am also going to get the 15" 2.4 model as unfortunately I am required to use Logic for around 20% of my university assignments.

Given the choice I would go for windows any day but I don't really have the option.

I won't be buying a machine until around October and I'm also worried that either apple will bring a new model out a month after I buy a machine, or I'll buy a brand new model and have the same problems people on this forum are complaining about.

I hope this is true
it worries me ><

These forums really amplify what is probably a batch of issues no worse than competing manufacturers.

Day one 15" SR MBP. No issues whatsoever. Just need to put in that 250GB WD drive!

Original Poster, here...

All above advice and experiences shared appreciated!!!

Sold my Core Duo imac (dual 2.0, 2 gigs ram, 250 7200 rpm drive) to buy this new SR generation of MBP. The imac was slow.

Crappola!!! I just don't want the same problems. I feared that this new platform was going to be slower than older ones. With bells and whistles, it seems Apple is going backwards. I would rather have a stripped down operating system that can Fly. I don't know, 4 gigs of Ram seems to be the new 2 gigs. More Candy, more ram and processing.

Perhaps I should buy C2D 17" 2.33 and wait for 6 months or so before I buy anything Revsion A. I believe I can add up to 3 gigs Ram on the 2.33 17", correct? If this option, Referbished, or not refurbished?
