Yellow tinge ... is it seen thru normal use?

I really want to pull the plug on a 27 Imac, but scared by all the posts here =P


However, I know that such posts are a fraction of the actual happy Imac owners who don't come here to post that their Imac is fine.


Is the yellow tinge actually noticeable thru normal use? Or just thru those gray bars tests?

Depends on how intensively you look for it in general use. What I've heard it's noticeable when in a dark room and having a solid colour background but when in a light room with colourful background, it's hardly noticeable. Again depends on what is too yellow for you and what isn't

Yeah, it is noticeable on white backgrounds.

E.g., I'd be browsing MR and I'd be reading down the page and see the yellow stain. I would also notice it all the time with Finder windows.

On most other backgrounds I couldn't see it, but white backgrounds come up all the time.

I did end up with a good iMac on the 4th one.

Good luck. They are great machines when you get a good one. I can't exactly recommend that you get one, but it is possible to get a good one -- though you might have to go through a frustrating process of Apple Care calls (where you sometimes have to argue stridently with the reps) and exchanges.

I too have been put off by people finding the screen having a yellow tinge.
Yesterday I checked out three 27" iMac's at three different stores, just to take a look for my self.

None of the machines had a visible yellow to them when browsing, watching a video, maximizing iTunes or even when looking for it. I had to use the grey bar test to actually notice it. And it didn't seem that bad IMO.
I did see some light bleeding from each corner though.

All of the iMac's were placed in quite bright surroundings, being in a store and all.
You might be able to see the yellow more prominently being in a less bright environment, but kind of doubt it. The bleeding I'm sure would be more noticeable in a darker room. I rarely have a completely black image on my current computer, so again not that big of a problem to me.

If I hadn't been told about the yellow I would never have noticed it.

If possible go out and have a look for your self.

Certain people tend to notice more than others. I'd say if you work with graphics often, you'll probably be more perceptive of it. That being said, the new screens in my opinions aren't the greatest regardless, so they might appear to have issues when they really don't, but if you have one of the screens that does have a yellow tinge, it's extremely obvious on white or grey, regardless of your viewing angle.

I've gone through 3 iMacs, all with moderate to severe yellow tinge, and it is definitely noticeable to me with normal use. If you never do anything that has a light background you probably wouldn't notice it, but the problem is that the vast majority of things do have light backgrounds.

What about in Aperture/Imovie (those are the two main applications I use ...) . I mean, I m a pixel peeper myself, and I do notice stuff like backlight bleeding immediately, but it generally does not bother me under normal circumstances ....

Worse case scenario, is it covered under Apple Care? Because in Canada we cant return custom configured IMacs (ie, a Corei7)

Again depends on a person, but it's not very easy to notice it while using Aperture and iMovie unless the yellowing is very strong.

It is covered by AppleCare so if it has yellowing, just call AppleCare.

I suggest you to buy e.g. i5 in store and check it in store before paying that it looks to be non-yellow

The problem is that there are different varieties of the yellow tinge, from hardly noticeable to severe.

Yes this is the case. If you have a display which has a bad amount of it, it will be noticeable. If you get a good display, it will probably not be noticeable except when you are specifically looking like in the gray bar test.

I was in the same boat as the original poster and ordered a 27 inch i7 (Week 11) online, which arrived earlier this week. Mine is also a victim of the yellow tinge issue. Specifically, the bottom right is fairly bad, but only noticeable on white or gray backgrounds. As someone already mentioned, a white web page background is noticeably off-color the further down and to the right I read. It's unnoticeable while viewing full-screen movies or pictures. Nonetheless, it's flawed and will be sent back Monday.

I highly recommend going to an Apple Store to make the purchase and scrutinize the screen of the one you'll buy. Take your time in doing so. To be fair, I would've soon noticed my screen's defect, but not immediately. I knew exactly what to look for when it arrived.

I tried to do this but none of the Apple Stores have the i7 iMacs, just i5.
