This may or may not be of value, depending if it has any affect with other people's iMacs. But I was VERY startled by it...

A neighbor has a new iMac, 27". She wanted some help tonight with basic things like setting up preferences and stuff. Anyway... I couldn't help but notice yellow tinge. And more strong than the previously-replaced model of my own. I didn't mention it to her for fear of spoiling her excitement.
What proved interesting however was this...

We went through the desktop images to see which she liked and we came to the Apple BLACK AND WHITE images (seascapes etc) and then SPECIFICALLY the one with the jetty receding into the water. Please select THAT image on your own desktop for a few moments..

ANY WHITE WINDOW OPENED ON THAT DESKTOP BACKGROUND (either totally white window or with color images within it) WAS TOTALLY FREE OF EVEN MINIMAL YELLOWING. The gray bars on the windows show absolutely NO WARMING or change of tone as they are moved down or across the screen. Totally even and without variation. I was quite amazed actually.
The difference was DRAMATIC.
Changing back to any color desktop image showed yellowing again, in any window as it was moved up and down or side to side on the screen.

I'd be interested to know if this is happening with other people's iMacs. If it is, it would be very worthwhile taking a look. I don't see why it should be limited to the neighbor's computer I was looking at.

Strangely, the same didn't happen when using a FLAT gray color desktop – just the photographic one.

Comments?

Thanks, I was happy to try it immediately.

However, it didn't change the yellow tinge for me.

Oddly, something about the background, actually made me notice the yellow tinge more, when I'd drag a white window down there.

Nevertheless, I'll try anything! Thanks for sharing. It's a shame so many are living with this poor yellow tinge. You have to feel bad for people in a way, but I'm sure they still enjoy the computer.

You're so nice for not mentioning it :)
So many people probably would have said it and ended up ruining the whole thing.

But, no yellow here. Happy about that haha.

But yeah, please try this. I wonder if it works.

However, it didn't change the yellow tinge for me.

That's disappointing. I'd hoped I'd stumbled on something that might be of use. But I can only repeat that what I saw was like a cleansing of her whole screen.
I hope this doesn't waste people's time, but I can only report what I saw...

Thankfully, my own screen is fine so far (after 3 days only).

Sir Cecil, could you please keep us up to date on how your iMac is doing? You've gotten a lot of flack, but I give you credit for honesty, i.e., if there is a problem, you are willing to admit it - sadly rare in online forums. While at it, would you mind checking off this list I keep - to see if anything here is relevant to your unit (and I'm ordering an i7 on 01/14/10):

1)Screen - Stuck/Dead pixels
2)Screen - Flickering screen, with brief blackouts
3)Screen - Yellow smudge at the bottom/elsewhere
4)Screen - LED backlight bleeding through in corners when screen is dark/black
5)Screen - High pitch whine from screen at max brightness after 30 minutes; also after turning down brightness by 30%
6)Screen - Dust or fingerprints trapped behind the monitor glass
7)iSight - Dead pixels
8)iMac as external monitor function not working
9)Noisy HDD - clicking or whirring, rumbling and whining
10)Constantly running fans at high volume
11)Intermittent hiss from external speakers hooked up
12)Frequent beachballs, despite not many programs running
13)Slow boot up
14)Random self generated restarts while using Firefox
15)Airport problems
16)Bad USB ports

Thanks in advance!

All in all I'm quit happy with this iMac actually, provided Apple will fix the yellow tinge at some point.

Week 2 i7, delivered 1/7
1) No dead pixels
2) No flickering or blackouts
3) No yellow that I can see, and I HAVE done all the tests that I can find
4) Small amount of backlight bleed in lower corners, though I hardly notice
5) No whine at all, at any power setting
6) No dust or fingerprints
7) 8 dead pixels in iSight, don't care, never use it, hardly noticeable when I tested as they are spread out
8) Not tested, as I do not have an external monitor with which to test
9) Hard drive is quiet as a mouse
10) Fans run at 900 -1000 RPM and can't be heard... ramp up to 2000 RPM at full load during handbrake encode and are still extremely quiet
11) No hissing from external or internal speakers at any time
12) One beachball only while starting up flash player in youtube the first time. None since.
13) Boot up was quick after setting internal HD as default boot
14) Not tested, prefer not to use Firefox as it has run slowly on MBP and mini
15) Airport working flawlessly
16) All USB ports working normally

Ptyger, that's outrageous - how the heck did you get ahold of my iMac!?! I am ordering an i7 on 01/14/10, and it looks like you snagged it from under my nose... and I'll be left with a faulty one:mad:

Enjoy your seemingly perfect iMac! :D

Good to see you'll be getting yours soon, though. I know you've been pining for one since they were announced. I hope you get one that meets your standards and that it remains all you want it to be.

Thanks Ptyger. Actually, I'm willing to live with a tiny bit of yellow streak - nothing crazy, of course. I figure if everything else is fine, why risk the treadmill of endless exchanges? Of course if it flickers like crazy or sounds like a jet engine on take off, then that's a deal-breaker.

Funny, as I already invested heavily in getting equipment that'll service the i7 - including a special mounting arm for $700, RAID enclosures for $1200, FW800 hub for $150 and so on. I don't have the computer, and I've already managed to spend almost $3000 on hardware and software.
