Yellow Tint..

So, how many of you have some yellow tinting on their new iMacs?

I just got my 27" and I have a bit on the bottom half. I really hate to return a BTO that is otherwise perfect. No pixel issues, flickering or anything. And the thing is so fast and quiet. If I hear that many people have tint issues with their new iMacs and is a common and issue then it's probably not worth playing the lottery game. If 90% say their's is absolutely perfect then exchanging mine is something to consider I suppose.

how much ram does ur imac have? are u going to install additional ram? if so from which brand?

yep, i bought an extra 8gig corsair cmso8gx3m2a1333c9 for 80 bucks to make 12gig, and it's running great, fast, no freezing/crashing.

well for example on a forum like this where it's a white background and black text. If you start reading the forum from the top of the screen and slowly work your way down, I can start to see a slight changing in color temperature (yellowing). I'm just trying to convince myself that it's acceptable and not go through the hassle of exchanging it to get one that could be worse in other ways. We all want perfection for the money we spend but lets face it, these days it's harder to get perfection.

All complaining aside the monitor is gorgeous and the speed is silky smooth. Haven't tried any gaming yet.

It IS silky smooth and the only noise it makes is my optical drive spinning up and my fans going when I SMC them to kick it up a notch. You problem seems quite noticeable and I would definitely look into comparing it to a replacement model in a store. That is something that will nag at you for a long time and it'll only get harder to replace your computer. Especially since you can flat out return it at this point

problem is, they don't have the 2G video card so I can't exchange it at a store.

dont exchange it man, just keep it, the next one will have other faults, no machine is perfect. enjoy what u have, it doesnt sound bad at all from what u describe.

regarding the ram, did u notice a speed improvement?

yeah, i know what you mean, it's a gamble.

as far as the ram, I didn't really test it much with only the 4gb. I just got the computer tonight and when I turned it on to make sure everything was ok and surfed a bit, I turned off the computer and added the new ram. All I know is everything is working great and running fast. Imagine this with an SSD? If you haven't added ram yet, just do it, an additional 8gb for less then a 100 bucks is a good deal.

yes im gonna add 8gb soon, did u disconnect everything from your imac when u installed the ram?(all connected cables including the power cord?)

and did u have to lay your imac Down or ram can be install with the imac standing in it normal position , i was thinking about just tilting the imac backwards so the ram panel becomes visible and to change the ram that way, i dont want to lay the imac down or anything.

what do u think?

yes, well, it's only one power cord at the back so I unplugged it, moved the thing to my bed and lay it down face down. Unscrew the 3 small screws (which is at the bottom of the screen) , remove the plate, and inserted the 2 new ram modules, one on the left and one on the right. They are seated right below the apple ram. Just make sure you have the ram facing the right way before you apply pressure to insert the ram. Easy as pie.

You are REALLY worried about your RAM! You need to just go for it. Then you will be done worrying about the easiest way to improve your computer.

set it to blow air at the back of the imac on an almost parallel angle to the back of the machine right behind the yellowing. I have a theory on yellowing and external air circulation if your iMac can't toss the heat off the back your machine yellows.

My imac does not have this problem. I have a crt 32 inch 4/3 ratio 1st gen HDTV 1080I a beast it weighs in at 250 LBS and the screen get classic yellow that the Imac gets.
I put a fan in a spot that blows air near the hot back and no yellow screen.

I went to my Home theater turned the tv on and took 3 photos of it. Of course there are a boat- load of scan lines that are not really visible to the naked eye. Right now the tv has no yellow and you can see the fan I am using it blows air away from the rear venting. I will turn the fan off and hope to get the really visible yellow in a half hour. In the first Photo is an eight switch outlet bottom right. The next set of photos will show the last switch on the right is off. Hopefully the tv will warm up enough to show the yellow line I get . I have that fan on top hooked up to a variac so I have full control of its speed.

I was inspired to start these tests because I own a good 27 inch wall mounted iMac with no yellow issues but a fear of them. I wanted to understand why my iMac is good. I also own this older 32inch hdtv with a crt screen it developed yellow screen issues about 3 or 4 months ago. I had read so many stories on the 27inch iMac that I thought maybe the hdtv has a heating issue so 10 or 14 days ago I started testing my fan idea.. It seems to be the case that the hot air just does not leave quick enough Plus in my tv's case age. I am thinking that really good air circulation on an iMac stops the yellow issue. I have not been able to get my iMac to turn yellow and I am not really trying to (LoL) but I have done enough testing with this crt screen to see a direct heat to yellow correlation. For some a slow moving fan may be a cheap easy fix for the imac yellow problem.

Apple can probably swap out your LCD section and save you the hassle of configuring a new machine.

Well I caved and called Apple.

They wouldn't send me a new one until I sent the old one back. I didn't want to do that fearing the new one will either have the same problem or have a different problem. I opted to purchase a new one first then once received and if perfect I will send the defective one back for a full refund. This is my first experience with Apple support and although they wouldn't send me a new one first I must say they were quite good and sympathetic. I asked for expedited shipping and at least they were able to do that for me. Let's hope the new one doesn't have any screen issues or other issues for that matter.

I sent one back last week. 27" 3.1 i5. Yellow tinge on the bottom left corner (from about half way up the screen) in a patch and then a noticable tinge along the bottom 2 inches of the rest of the screen.

I did notice that the packagin was a bit damaged, and also the film on the screen was a bit bubbled. I wondered if it had been opened before.....

picked up a 2.7 i5 in the apple store on Saturday and that's fine.

i had it on my 24" LED Cinema Display got the panel replaced. it is still under applecare but it would have been a $700~ fix ($600 for the panel itself)

having the same problem with the OP and so i called apple yesterday.
they'll send me a new iMac on Sunday and i just have to hand them the one i'm using now by that time~
