Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying "the Monocle has been activated." It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS.

Works. Now I know exactly which direction area restaurants are while I'm going to the bathroom.

Neat. Kinda funny that they snuck it in as an easter egg. Apple never would have let it in otherwise.

Doesn't work as it should. Firstly, I shook my phone for a long time for it to finally pop up. I felt like I was jacking off my phone and didn't want anyone to walk in on me while I was testing this out, lol. When I inputing text on any other app, such as Messages, I can shake to undo with little to no effort but for some reason it was harder with this app...might just be my iPhone. Anyways, my compass was calibrated and north was facing the right direction so no problems there. I tested the app out without any interferences nearby and yet it didn't face me in the correct direction of the POIs near my area. It told me a nearby Chinese restaurant was southeast when it should've been saying it was due west. Same SE direction with gas stations and banks. I live in a little country town and the ONLY things that are east of my location are a storage facility, a water tower, and a lot of open land (ironically enough, the storage facility was the only thing that the app told me was to my west, lol). Everything else in town is to my west. The strange thing though is that it's pinning me in the right location when I look at the map in the app.

works great... had to shake ti a few times to get it to show up, but once you "activate" it its always there

You need to have an account and log in

no you don't. I don't have an account, and it works fine for me. For anyone who can't get it to work, just do three separate shakes, i.e. hold you hand up and bring it swiftly down, repeat twice, as if you're trying to get the last splodge of ketchup out of the bottle :)

Or that last splodge of ______ out of your _______.

Is there a reason that only 3g's seem to be able to do this augmented reality stuff? I know they have the video cameras but these apps are not taking video's are they?

Can't an app access the camera (I know they can cause I have a microsoft tag scanner on my iphone downloaded from the app store)

You need the compass to know which direction the phone is aiming.

Just downloaded.
Just shook the hell out of my phone (looking like an idiot).
Nothing.

Do you have to be in a certain menu?

EDIT:!!!!!!
I keep shaking it, never give up. Then I get:
"the Monocle is activated. Yelp thought reality was boring, so we augmented it. Look for the button in the upper right corner"

OK so I updated the app, it wasn't showing in my updates, i had to search and download again.

Anyhow, I've shaken this iphoen so much tha tI can actually hear something moving around inside now. Still doesn't work.

Oh well.

It uses the compass.
