Ok- I know, I know, you can buy one of those "external emergency battery pack thingys" if you absolutely MUST have power now when your iWhatever dies - but their ugly as s**t and that isn't the point.
I've been bitching about this since the first iPod went to market - and it's obvious since other manufacturers can put user-replaceable batteries in devices just as slim as what Apple offers, it's a purposeful design on their part to have you go through the aggravation of paying the extra beans to have a new one swapped in.
GOOD. I hope this slaps Apple across the face, and makes them start producing devices that don't come attached with a string every time you'd like to do something as mundane as changing the battery for a fresh one when the music/talk-time dies.

I agree with that mandate, I hope it comes through. Granted, it'd take away a bit of the physical appeal, but would add a ton of practical appeal.
After the warranty is over apple will charge devious sums for battery replacement, making it more likely that people will simply throw the device away and get a new one. Not very "green" of Apple, admittedly.

I don't think so. Consider the batteries on the PowerBook/MacBook Pro line. You cannot see them, since they are accessed from underneath. It has no visual effects on the machine at all, unless you look underneath. Of course, at that point, you're also looking at stickers and numerous screws too.
I think the current iPod Classic, Air and even the new iPhone already agree to this proposed mandate as their batteries are quite easy to remove given the right tools.
The idea behind it is for the recycling of the batteries rather than a consumer to replace them when they are out and about.

^^ Yep, that's pretty much what I was playing on. In the case of an iPod or iPhone, the battery cover would most probably be at the back, making it a whole lot more visible than on a laptop, which is usually sitting on a surface.
