I was watching Star trek Voyager today and they were talking about how fast the ships computer can process information.

they said. 574 Trillion operations per nanosecond
well this ends up being 573,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 per second
or 574 Sextillion

checking out the current worlds fastest computer that can do 280.5 Trillion ops a second.. i did some silly calculations and figured.. 1. that the fictional voyager computer is currently about 2 billions times faster. and 2. that if supercomputer speeds increase 150% year on year. supercomputers will match the voyagers computer speed by the year 2072

Using your numbers, I got 2078, but I'm not sure, as I tried doing the math using a handheld calculator and the power of my slow brain.

Either way, I've got you beat on nerdiness - I was watching an episode of Voyager and surfing these forums when I came upon this post and did the math.

Also, kinda along the same lines - it would be interesting if someone could compare the supposed computer processing power of the different Star Trek ships with the max computing power of the time the show was made, and project that to see when we will most likely reach that level of actual power. If anyone has time to figure that all out, of course.

You're just as much a nerd as anyone though, I think it's funny that the term "nerd" can be considered an insult...everyone I know has at least one thing they dedicate themselves to. i.e. your dedication lies with science fiction, some girls dedicate themselves to fashion and all elements related. Some people are extreme sports fans, knowing every team and number that any individual has ever played under. People who lack such "nerdy" dedication are dry and boring, hell even potheads can become a pseudo-mcguiver when they need it...they can implement all necessary means in order to assemble drug related devices. But that's just my take on it...

moreover, isn't the term "connoisseur" just a grown up term for "nerd"

the real question is what version of mac os is it running? is it still using intel, or did apple move back to ibm (after purchasing them)?

if it is intel, does it still have a wireless problem?
are they using integrated graphics?
