Hello, I have tried to do some research on here and can’t seem to figure out a direction and asking for some input. I understand everyone is different but hearing others opinions sometimes helps to solidify intuition or guide in a new thought.
I am a graphic designer. I take many photos (RAW) on DSLR, iPhone, shoot some iPhone videos, compile year-in-review photo/video slideshow Videos in iMovie for each kid on their birthday.
I currently have a 2008 24” iMac (Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 1TB spinner). It sits in the basement where my ‘office’ resides. I havent really used it much in the past 5 years since it has been really slow and my work provides me a MBP. I am on my second MBP at work (2015) with the idea that a new MBP will be coming later this year (current work machine has 1TB SSD & 16GB RAM and seems fine). In the past 5 years I sometimes pull out the work machione and surf, work on Photo editing, the movies, invitations for kids. But, I think it is time to get back a HOME Computer.
I like the idea of an iMac as the screen is great, it’ll be faster than my current home machine and most likely the work MBP whatever I end up getting – but it is in the basement. I love the portability of a MBP, take anywhere, but the screen is small. I realize I can hook up a MBP to an external monitor and I can bring the iMac upstairs if I want for the couple times I might want to use it more with the family nearby. It seems price-wise, I can get a better machine (based on specs) for the iMac than the MBP.
I am leaning toward the 27” i9, 512 SSD, 580X, 8GB RAM (for now). I want a machine that could/should last a while. If I went with MBP or iMac, I’d get an External Drive for media storage/files, then a backup for that/cloud too. Though, still not sure the external storage & backup route either. Can I (I doubt it) save a Photos Library (or Lightroom) on a (network attached) External and then open with either iMac or MBP (like if I had my work MBP and wanted to edit some photos by connecting to my library/drive that way)? That may be more of a Photo Forum Question. Perhaps I can just export a Photos/Lightroom Library (from work MBP) and import onto the Home External.
*A photographer at work uses a MBP and BenQ monitor then has just a WD MyBook Mirror/1 extra External (all spinning drives) and Backblaze. He would love a Drobo or Synology like work but for home, he chose those on cost.*
Thanks in advance for any feedback, insight.
