For those of you enjoying leaks, here is one more:
  • M1X-powered 16" MBP: increased clock speeds, 4 ports, RAM up to 32 GB; SSD up to 2TB(?); 2021Q1 or WWDC
  • M1-powered 13" MBP with 4 ports, launch before 16" ASi MBP
  • 10GBe option on Mini: same timeframe as 13"
  • MBP 14": no info
Sounds more conservative (and therefore more realistic) compared to LeaksApplePro claiming M1X specs for 16 inch identical to current Intel-based 16" MBP.

I do believe the next iteration of M1 will be M1X and will try to accommodate a slightly higher spec for the MacBook Pro. I don’t mind with the current 2-ports but will be nice if Apple can really really upgrade to beefier Thunderbolt ports.

So you can suddenly have 4 Thunderbolt ports with M1... ?
What’s changed is that Apple is designing their own thunderbolt controllers. Unlike intel they support only one TB port per controller. So ln the M1 (the low end chip) they decided to put in two controllers. In the M1x they will put in 4.

Why would you think you couldn't? ❔

The currently released two-port M1 MBP models replaced the previous two-port Intel MBP models.
Because they specifically changed the mini from 4-ports to 2-ports. The assumption is that to save on costs since the M1 was only for the lowest-end macs, they only put in 2 TB controllers.

If all they did was add 2 more ports, It seems odd that they would have two configurations of the mini and 13” MBP and the only difference is the number of ports. The 4-port 13” MBP has always been more powerful compared to the 2-port. The M1 is a 15W chip inside a 65W thermal envelope in the mini. They have massive headroom for a theoretical M1X chip and it would make sense to tie that with the 4-port variants as well.

So the M1X could go in the 4-port 13” MBP, 16” MBP, and 4-port mini. Possibly the 24” iMac as well. That would also justify the R&D needed for chip design if it can be used across 4 products, and help lower costs on Apples end.

Every leak other than this says more cores as well. If this guy was gonna make up stuff the least he could do is crib some of the other leaks/rumors.
