Yet Another Memory Suggestion Requested

I have a mid-2010 i7 2.93 with 4gb of ram and am looking to add another 8gb.

Newegg has some pretty good prices but I cannot decide on which 2 x 4gb combination to buy, Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Transcend or G.Skill. Or would you suggest another brand?

All of the threads I have read about memory issues never seem to pinpoint a conclusion so any help you could provide would be appreciated, especially if you are using one of the brands above.

Most of the brands you listed are good and you probably cannot go wrong.

I have the exact same iMac as you and I just bought 16GB of RAM for it from OWC for $233. OWC is a trusted source for RAM and many other Mac things.

I haven't heard of the last two. I just bought memory from Crucial and it works fine.

I would guess that there are 3 main issues with memory:

* Mistakenly buying RAM that doesn't have the right specs for your Mac
* Not using matching RAM
* Getting a defective module

For the first bullet, just double-check that what you're buying is indeed what your Mac needs. Not over spec'd or under spec'd.

For the second bullet, I didn't bother with adding RAM - I took all the old RAM out and discarded it. RAM is soooo cheap now that I went to max RAM and I couldn't use the old sticks in any case. Nicely enough, the RAM kits I got from Crucial just happened to have consecutive serial numbers, which was kinda cool (but hardly important).

I wouldn't worry too much about the third bullet unless you get crashes after you add RAM and you've paid attention to the first two bullets.

Mac RAM isn't the weird animal it used to be.

Go with whatever is the cheapest with lifetime warranty and compatible specs. All the brands you listed are very well known and trusted RAM brands so there is nothing to worry about. NewEgg reviews are always a good indicator of the product too

Thank you for the replies. I am well aware of making sure that the specs are equal so no worries with that but I just wanted to make sure there were no specific brands to stay away from.

I've been ordering memory from OWC (macsales.com) for about 3 years now, and they're absolutely great.
