yikes (mbp on its way to 90deg)

my mbp is ton its way to 90deg on the cpu! and its not even doing full load.

its about 70% encoding with divx, fans just kicking in to keep things cool, but damn it feels like you could cook eggs on the bit of the chassis just above the kb

i dunno if i dare attempt playing games .... cpu and gpu at full load cooled by the same cooler...oh my.

but heres a question -> does the divx converter use the GPU for encoding? gpu temp is almost identical to the CPU temp.

i guess this is what you get for wanting a 1 inch thick chassis

do you think its worth getting one of those cooler pads to sit the mbp on? so the bottom can transfer all its heat to a cool metal surface? or something to elevate it off the desk?

i dont think ill bother sending it back if these temps are abnormal, i dont think theyre too out of what for whats inside this thing, but ill wait for a while anyway, if i deem it too hot ill send it back to apple for replacement hopefuly by then any manufacturing issues theyve had will of been cured.

also while im here, i cant get opera to fade back when i go to the dashboard.....it stays on top obscuring everything, what have i pressed?

I was in the same boat with my new MBP, however I re-used the notebook cooler i had for my G4 ibook, which also helps raise the keyboard to a more acceptable typing angle. This one was about $20 AUD at a local computer fair.. infact, i'll be getting another one this weekend to prop my ibook on because tehy're damn good.

This cooler has 2x 60mm fans on it, just plugs right into my powered usb hub.

Temps wise, my SR MBP was also hitting 90+ temps and yes the keyboard bit was hot enough to cook eggs on too! However now they're in the 70's region, although still hot, coupled with SMC fan control its running rather nicely now.

While kusanagi's notebook cooler does look really awesome, and does its job well... it's entirely possible that the original poster's heat concerns would be solved another way. By taking back the MBP and having Apple inspect/repair/replace its thermal paste application, or re-applying the thermal paste himself. Or possibly using SMCfancontrol to run the fans at 6000 rpm or whatever all the time (an extreme solution). Good luck, original poster.
 
the fans kicked in before it reach 90, but for a moment i thought it was going there.

they got to about 4500rpm and kept the cpu aroun 70....thats not to bad i suppose, considering theres a decent load on the cpu. still wondering why the gpu temp rose as well, either it is encoding a little (hence why the cpu never pegged out at 100) or the heat generated by the cpu was warming the gpu up as well.

anyway to its credit it soon cooled back down once the load was taken off, so i guess something is going right there. idle now at 48 deg. not ideal but i think quite good given the confined space.

i jus realised another thing ... in the dark, the LED screen is so bright it actually can stop the auto dimming from working lol:D how mads that


6000rpm is too much, but honestly 4000rpm isnt bad at all, theres noise, its audiable but its not irritating...just a gentle whooshing noise
 
Otis, you haven't mentioned the use of SMC Fan control yet. Give it a whirl, i have set my minimum fan speed to 3000RPM now which keeps it nice and cool doing norml tasks and prevents the rapid on set of heat when i am maxing it.

Also look at the 'iLap' in the apple store.

Based on this, I would say there's no problem. There have been a couple other threads in regards to 'alleged' heat problems with the MBP which are unfounded. I think this has caused some doubt, which was obviously the goal. Don't worry about it, unless it gets over 100C for an extended period of time, meaning more than an hour or so, then you may need to have it looked at.
 
I take it that 90 is in Celsius? That MBP is hotter than my MB playing flash games (170F). If you're just encoding video, it shouldn't get that hot, although video is somewhat complicated, maybe it's the DivX? What model is it? Either way, you might want to have Apple look at it for problems, if not, get a cooler thingy.
 
It's pretty easy to get it to 90C. Open two terminals and type this in each:

yes > /dev/null

Wait 60 - 90 seconds. When it hits 90, the fans kick in, just like the original poster noticed.
