I have been 'lurking' around here for a few weeks now and just now officially became a proud owner of a C2D2.0/2GB/160GB White Macbook!

I'm figuring it out slowly but surely, but you know what? I'm having a blast! I haven't even installed Boot Camp on it yet to boot up Windows (XP). I kind of want to get a feel for my new Operating Environment before I go and mess around with that. I know I will eventually, because I want to be able to play EQ whenever I am around a hotspot and get bored.

Thank you all for providing such great feedback to other new posters and potential MacAddicts! The general maturity of a Mac owner is easily head and shoulders above any other Windows forum that I have visited yet.

Congratulations! That's the exact model I just ordered as well, mine should be coming in tomorrow. Yes, the maturity level of a "Mac" owner is above the usual "Windows" user. Not that I'm trying to nit pick at anyone particular but yeah.. Hope you enjoy your new MacBook!

Hate to tell you this, but...if you want to install Boot Camp, do it as early as possible.

While Macs automatically defrag anything under 20 MB, you can get fragmented large files on the hard drive. Files that are pretty large really don't matter if they're not defragged, BUT their physical location on the drive can be enough to prevent Boot Camp from partitioning, so you won't be able to install it, and the only way to fix it is to either reformat or go out and buy iDefrag (spend more money, ick).


I ran into this problem on my MacBook.


But seriously, congratulations on the purchase. I'm very satisfied with my MacBook. I got the white Core Duo, and upgraded it to 2 GB RAM and a 160 GB hard drive.

I believe you can defrag with 3 party software...

I'm not so sure about the whole fragmented disk myth, I installed Bootcamp 6 months after getting my Mac and had no issues with it successfully partitioning the hard drive for XP. Still using it now and it's running well.

Thanks for the info, I will install as soon as I can. But I am having alot of fun poking around OSX and exploring all the things that come with it. It's really amazing how well everything 'just works' and works very well. Once I get done doing that, I will get things up and running.

Grats in advance on your new Macbook! I am really having fun with mine! It's like I just started computing for the first time in my life again! Ha-ha!

Congrats on the Macs to both of you!

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't install bootcamp or parallels at all.
The reason I switched over to a Mac is because I would be able to use Windows...I NEVER do! There are replacements for just about anything Windows on a Mac. Keep learning and then decide, have fun!!

Not a myth; I encountered this problem when I tried to install Boot Camp 3 weeks after installing a new 160 GB hard drive, and was unable to. (I had a large number of 1-2 GB video files I ripped from handbrake)

There's a whole thread on it. The only solution was iDefrag.
 
congrats have fun with your new machine. i as well just got a new mac and am loving it!
 
Semi-along the topic of this thread...Has anyone had any problems using bootcamp for vista, osx, and also a linux distribution?

I'll probably end up with a big external hard drive..

Congratulations on the new baby! :D

I use Parallels and it works great. It's fast and actually installed Windows better than my old PC ever did.

I didn't install Bootcamp because I don't really play games and I didn't want it to permanently grab 30GB of my HD. Parallels seems to expand and contract as needed. Oh, also, I like having the ability to share documents in two OSs simply by dragging it from one window to the other.

I understand that you can run both if you want to. Install Bootcamp first and Parallels will find it.
 
Congrats! I am a recent switcher, I have a Macbook (see sig) and I am loving it! I installed Bootcamp but I have used it about twice within one month. The most annoying thing is that my school use PCs and they really suck! lol

BTW - You can install both Bootcamp and Parralles - I have done it :D
 
You're right!

An :apple: a day IS better than a PC! Heheh!

After goofing around with X, I haven't really found a compelling reason to sacrifice the space on my HD just yet. I know I can play EQ on it, but I might just leave that for the Home PC (egads!) and maybe just play WoW on my Macbook. After getting used to the OS and some of its features, I almost don't want to install boot camp because I'd feel as if I were tainting or 'ruining' my Macbook. I'll probably just run Parallels for the MS Office software.

I now understand why everyone is so 'high' on :apple: , it's just simply awesome!

Just because there's a whole thread on it doesn't deny someone an opinion based on years of Mac experience :)

I've owned Macs since the early 90's and I have never defragged the HDD. Like I said above, 6 months after getting my MB I used Bootcamp to partition my HDD for Xp and have not experienced any issues at all.

I stand by my advice that you do not need to defrag a Mac.
