I updated my 2013 MacBook Air from Snow Leopard to Yosemite the other day. I noticed that the text annotations I make on my lecture notes on Preview get flipped upside down or rotated 90 degrees whenever I re-open the file. Are there any ways to fix this?

Oh man I've been struggling with Preview too on Yosemite!

I used to be able to pick the rectangle tool, and then click and drag to draw a rectangle around whatever I wanted. Now it seems to just add a big square in the middle of the page, and I have to drag it around, and then click in the corners to resize it. It's absolutely terrible!

Same with text boxes. I used to be able to choose a text box, and then click where I wanted it. Now it inserts the text box immediately into the middle, and I have to find it, drag it, then grab the corners and resize it. Atrocious!

I really miss the old Preview app from Mavericks :(

Don't know about the OPs problem but the way that the Preview drawing tools work in Yosemite is consistent with the way the drawing tools have always worked in Apple's Keynote and Pages. So while upsetting it is a move toward a consistent user interface. (FYI, I find it cumbersome, too, so end up using other programs when I have to add more than a couple of objects.)

Appearance of the Edit toolbar in Preview

It's comparable not only to Keynote and Pages, it's also comparable to the interface to Preview in Mavericks and at least one lesser version of the operating system.

Incidentally, when I first saw the screenshot above I imagined (wrongly) that the opening post was an OT pharmaceuticals promotion. My housemate works in infection control at a local hospital so I should know better than to jump to such conclusions …
