just a quick question. how would you characterise animations in yosemite as opposed to mavericks. are the new animations smoother frame-wise, ios 7 like? i was always curious how could a mobile phone have better, smoother, nicer looking animations than a desktop pc 10 times more powerful. is it about coreanimation or what?

I've wondered the same thing, but I usually come to the conclusion that Apple feels they don't need as fancy animations for OS X, and in a lot of places, I agree.
They are adding more effects in Yosemite though, I'm interested to see how far they go since even the radio buttons and checkboxes are animated now, haha

its not actually about the number of different animations, its about fluidity. i dont think they are rendered in 60fps in mavericks, even dragging windows around seems 25fps-ish... finder and safari opening, preview opening and closing, finder scrolling, its not nearly as fluid as in ios 7...
i know, i know... first world problems
Funny thing is, things like dragging windows, scrolling is actually 60fps at most parts and in most "good" developed applications. Apple is pushing always on WWDC sessions the right way to get smooth scrolling at 60fps with minimal CPU cost.
You can also test this on Mavericks if you are using Quartz debug for example from Apple (xCode developer tools) and start scrolling or dragging things around you see it go to 60fps

I would give much to have fluid maximize animations.
On late 2013 rMBP (2.4, 8, 256) maximizing iMovie (not going fullscreen) is like 2-3 frames TOTAL. I hate it so much..
Scrolling is in contrast super smooth, unless you're viewing Faces screen in iPhoto which scrolls in epic 2-5 FPS.

Hmm dunno, looks pretty smooth on my copy of Yosemite, cba to log back onto Mavericks to compare, but I've not noticed any huge difference. Going full screen in apps still doesn't look anywhere near as smooth as opening apps on iOS.
I dunno, would it slow the mac down as a whole if they increased the frame rate by a significant amount? Maybe in a later DP/beta they'll update it... hopefully

continuous or fast scrolling*: 47-60FPS
changing desktop (scrolling through) with open safari window: 33-45FPS (stutters a bit)
dragging windows: 50-60FPS
going back from full screen: 45FPS
minimizing safari(genie effect): 38FPS (feels smooth)
mazimizing safari(genie effect): 45FPS
going back from mission control: 45FPS

Wow, thanks a lot. I've always wondered about these - some have always seemed to have a low fps count to me.
iOS also has plenty of things like that - like swiping between Springboard pages and especially horizontal swiping in the app switcher.
