I'm not sure what's at fault - Yosemite or Minecraft.. And I'm not sure if Minecraft is a red herring. I have Yosemite on our Macbook Pro and on a new iMac. On the macbook, after someone has played Minecraft and the computer is re-opened from sleep, instead of getting the login we get a black screen with spinning beachball of death. It never clears up (even after waiting an hour) and no key-combo will bring up any force-quit menu. We have to hold down the power button to reboot.

On the iMac, I noticed a similar-ish thing: My son was playing Minecraft (full screen), which went fine except when he pressed the "Quit" menu option on the screen, the screen went black and all we had was the arrow. NOTHING I could do would bring back the desktop or Finder. I tried the ESC button. I tried option-command-ESC, but that wouldn't bring up any force-quit menu. I tried clicking in all four corners. I tried waiting an hour. Nothing.

Thoughts? And more generally: why would a modern OS like Yosemite be capable of getting hosed by ANY app? I never see iOS lock up fully after using an app. I only see individual apps crash. Come to think of it, Windows 7 never crashes like this for me either (at work).

Bump. Nothing? Do other folks here either not play Minecraft or not have Yosemite? I'd say about half the time we quit Minecraft (from full screen mode), we get stuck on a black screen with the beachball. Sometimes there's a small area on the screen where the beachball will turn into the black arrow, but it doesn't help.

I've tried option-command-esc, option-command-shift-esc, command-tab, and I've tried the various function keys. And i've tried all of those key combos above while holding them down for many seconds. Nothing except turning the machine off helps.

Anyway, even if nobody cares about Minecraft crashing, why should a modern OS like Yosemite be brought to its knees by an APP? iOS doesn't fail like that.

I play Minecraft on both a Macbook Air 2012 and Mac Mini 2014 running Yosemite and i don't have this issue, works fine so Minecraft and Yosemite are compatible. . Im running Java 1.8 and Feed The Beast launcher for minecraft. Both were clean installs of the OS. Only thing i can think of is remove Java and reinstall Java as Minecraft is a java app.

I also think there's something wrong with Minecraft and Yosemite. My issue isn't like yours but I'm definitely running into a lot of issues. Mainly, minecraft will get extremely laggy (even in singleplayer..) and I'll get the spinning ball trying to do anything and I open Activity Monitor and see that it's taking up like 70% of my CPU (if that means anything..) and the only solution is to restart the computer and hope it doesn't happen again for the day. So strange. I'm considering a clean install of Yosemite.

Me too, +1, bump...

I have the exact same issue. My sun plays minecraft, and frequently upon exit the machine locks up. Black screen and spinning beach ball. Nothing works. Have to hold down the power button, turn off the machine and restart to do anything.

I've had a lot of issues w/ Yosemite, but this one is the only fairly consistent crash I've run across.

I'm really looking forward for a solution of this problem. My Yosemite finally seems stable now but this annoying issue remains.

Update: I just noticed there's a Java update which I immediately installed. Java update 8 version 31. Maybe this helps? I will post if so.

possible solution?

We may have solved it?

When my son played minecraft on his account, he would consistently crash the system on exit.

While investigating, I discovered that there was an update to minecraft. So I installed it (on my account) and tested it - no crash.

When I told my son about this, he said "oh yeah, that update has been out for a while." He had obviously updated his some time ago.

What I'm wondering is if updating as a user w/ administrative privileges had anything to do w/ ending the crashes? We've not had a crash since I did the update.
