Yosemite bricked my laptop. Help!

Just downloaded Yosemite a few hours ago and tried updating my MBP retina (2 years old) and it went to a blank grey screen. It sat there for a few hours and eventually died and when I plugged it up with the charger it won't turn on now.

It's just dead and Im trying to study for 3 tests this week so fml. Any help or suggestions?

Go to the Apple Store, get it fixed and restore your time machine backup :thumbs:

Or alternatively before that you may want to see if you can boot from the recovery partition and or alternative media

Thanks! Yes I will definitely go to the store, but I'm not sure how to do the alternative. Any guide I can read?

cmd+r for recovery
option for an alternative medium (but I guess you don't have any bootable)

press those before pressing the power button and keep pressed until you hear the startup sound. in recovery you should be able to either do a new install or (if you have one) restore from an backup (time machine)

Ok update on the laptop, I opened it up and it randomly came back on, but I don't think Yosemite has updated. It's downloaded but I don't think it has installed the update. Any suggestions for how to do that?

You should still see the Yosemite installer in your Applications folder if the install did not occur. You can just launch that installer app if you want to take another shot at it.

i'd recommend you hold off on updating until after your exams, wouldn't want some shenanigans to go wrong and have you stressing about that and the exams!
