Yosemite deleted a user account!

Just updated my iMac to Yosemite and a user has completely disappeared! The account was called Guest (but wasn't a "Guest user") so maybe that has something to do with it. Whatever happened, I've lost a load of important files.

Fortunately I have a TM backup from yesterday but before I downgrade and wait god knows how long for it to restore from my NAS, does anyone have any ideas? If I could locate the specific files I'd just add a new user.

just go to backup folder on time machine drive, latest backup, user and copy whatever you need from there

You should not have to downgrade just to get your files back from Time Machine. Time Machine goes back beyond OS upgrades. Your files will be there.

They are there but I don't have permission to open them.

Recreate the Guest user. Then go into Time Machine as Guest and recover the files.

If Yosemite installed correctly, it should have created a recovery partition. That is what you should see (10.10), when booting with the option key.

As to a TM recovery, it depends on which date in the TM backup you pick. If it is one since Yosemite was installed, you will recover back to Yosemite. If you want TM Mavericks, you need to pick a date before the Yosemite install.

You should be able to sudo your way into those files by using the Terminal.

Start doing some reading on cp and ls.

I did a full restore using a TM backup from my NAS saved the day before I updated. Mavericks is back, the user account icon is there but when I log in it's a blank canvas, nothing in Documents.

Strangely, the user was always called Guest but there's a Guest1 folder in the users folder that I can't access. If I try to change the account name in system prefs from Guest to Guest1 it says that name is in use but there's nothing on the users list.

EDIT; Viewed all the User folders by changing permissions and using a root account. The files aren't there
