Yosemite heat issues

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a sizeable increase in the amount of heat generated by their MacBook since the PB yesterday? I have a MBPr late '13 which ran cool and absolutely silently (ie. fan hardly ever kicked in) with Mavericks, and is getting too hot even to hold at times. I have been running Logic, but it was even happening last night while only using Safari.

Is this the type of thing to expect in beta phase or is it something to be concerned about?

I noticed my MacBook getting unusually warm last night after running the beta for a few hours, but within 30 minutes of ejecting my external HDD it cooled down completely, even with iTunes, Safari, Mail and messages all on the go.

I'm gonna do some more testing tonight to see if there's a connection, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is. Beta's generally aren't properly optimised for the hardware until the final stages.

yeah I had the heat issue as well on my MBP. It didn't really cool down either.

I have a 2012 cMBP with a standard HDD and I noticed a lot of page ins/outs.

Submitted a report to apple and hopefully they figure out whats causing the issue before final release.

Yes, I also have the same issue. My Macbook Air is only a couple of weeks old too and had no problems with it until installing Yosemite this afternoon. Have sent a report to them.

It's normal for a new OS install. I'm running on one of the older supported macs (classic style Early '09 MacBook) and it was much warmer for a while as it indexed the drives, downloaded mail, downloaded and synced all my calendars, etc. It's back to normal now and the temps look much like they did in Mavericks, and even Snow Leopard.

Now my rMBP was cooking too, but it had another partition it was indexing along with a 4TB external. So that was to be expected. And it's a beta, so some code may be rather inefficient and buggy using more CPU than usual.

Same for me, albeit I did notice the fan does kick on a lot faster when using Chrome etc. than it has under Mavericks.

I've heard that about Chrome, regardless of which OS one is using. I just stick with Safari as my primary browser these days.

Safari does kick butt in Yosemite. I am much happier with it.

Computer is running about 5-10 degrees higher than on Mavericks. Expected in beta but I did notice the change. Tried to do an SMC reset to see if that was what was causing it but no change.

UPDATE: So I just checked my activity monitor and saw that I had a "cloudd" process that is keeps on running the CPU from 10-100%! Pretty sure that's the cause. Went to iCloud pref and turned off iCloud Drive for right now and now computer is running considerably cooler!

Apparently I spoke too soon. I just found that mdworker32 was running heavy and a Launchpad and Spotlight process were not responding in Activity Monitor so I killed the two of them. My CPU temp was up to 174℉ with just Safari, Mail, Tweetbot, Messages and the beta crash report apps open.

I've just restarted back into Mavericks for now and the temp's are coming back down.

After i upgraded i noticed high CPU levels with the usereventservice. I found a way to disable and the problem went away.

appears to get warmer on my rMBP too but it might just be those summer temperatures outside supporting it. not too sure about that

Ha yes! Did think that was probably a factor. I think the fan has been drawing warm air! To be honest, I think its settling down a bit. Certainly not getting worryingly hot like it was the other day.

What did you do to disable it?

cd /System/Library/UserEventPlugins
sudo mv com.apple.cts.plugin com.apple.cts.plugin.disabled

I have experienced the heat issues (I feel the warm on the keyboard, and the fan noise) but when my rMBP is running on battery and right after it awakes from sleep mode a process "CalendarAgent" starts taxing the CPU for several minutes accordingly with the Activity monitor.

When rMBP is connected to a power outlet, runs fine
