Upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks on a top end iMac with 3TB fusion drive and when I switch it on and open safari it's fine for about 5 minutes then I get the spinning wheel and I can't open anything else. Mouse moves but nothing opens I have to power off at the back. Spotlight search no good either. Typed in terminal and it just gave me a Wikipedia reference not an option to open the app. What should I do? Try installing again from App Store. Have time machine backups from last week but not sure if you can restore full OS from that? It's fine on my MacBook pro but I don't have as much software on that. Need it for Working on tomorrow so need to sort tonight.

Is this happening very shortly after the upgrade?
It is possible that Spotlight is still indexing which may be causing the issues.
I have Yosemite installed on 3 iMacs, a 2013 i7, a 2012 i7 with Fusion and a 2007 C2D and I have not had any beach balls as of yet and I tested doing a lot of searches in Finder which is where most people are saying their machines will temporarily hang up.
Driving me mad. Can use it for about 5-10 minutes then I get the beach all and whole thing locks up when I toggle between Safari and Finder. Searching in spotlight for Disk Utility brings up Wikipedia again and not the app. Says it's finished indexing. Left it downloading Yosemite again earlier after posting this. Went downstairs to watch TV. Came back up and screen all black with spinning beach ball. Thing is borked good and proper. Best way to get back to do a clean install? Haven't done one for 3 years so loads of things I would need to save first. Can I go back to Mavericks?

Finder hanging all the time
Finder is hosed on my Macbook Pro (Retina, mid-2012, 2.7 i7, 16GB, 750 SSD). It's not a Spotlight problem. I upgradedto Yosemite 10 days ago. All file dialog (e.g. Save As) and all Finder windows go into beachball.
First the beachball for about 2 seconds, then it just hangs, then it beachballs for about 20 seconds. All file window interactions take about 30 seconds (instead of 1/8th of a second). Every time, every application (Finder, Safari, Preview).
Also, if I need to enter a filename, trying to type into the box doesn't work - it stutters and then veeerrry slowwly echoes my input characters, then it beachballs some more.

If your going to do that, then maybe you could try an alternative to spotlight. I find "Alfred" extremely good: http://www.alfredapp.com/
Assign it to cmd+space and it works very similar to spotlight, but is extremely customisable.

I get the color wheel in multiple applications including internet, spotlight, email, etc. Also, my cursor tends to disappear and isn't very responsive sometimes! Errr.

Ok all, I had all the issues listed above & just wanted to toss it out the window. It would crash every 5 minutes & had the constant beach ball. I would have Terminal open & Finder was always 'not responding'. My iMac had 24gig ram, which is way more than the standard 8 it ships with. Well, all my issues went away when I maxed it out with 32gig. Hope it helps you all

The iMac crashes every single day and restarts itself.
Whenever I start Safari it loads the homepage, but won't go any further for minutes and as I refuse to wait (which is the reason I gave up on Windows computers) I find force quitting safari and restarting safari resolves the issue until the next time. And the next time is usually after a sleep...
Such a shame. It's total and complete uselessness. ...and don't get me started on iCloud Drive.

Having constant crashes is not normal. What happens when you boot into safe mode. Do you still get crashes if you run in that mode for a while. Have you tried creating a clean install on another partition and see if the crashes still happen?
