Yosemite Mail hangs when loading?

This issue started for me shortly after the Yosemite upgrade. I'm on a 2011 MacBook Pro, 13"

When opening Mail, the window will come up with only senders and subject lines for existing emails (left-side pane - the two-line email preview is missing). In addition, the preview pane will show nothing, even if I click on an existing email. New emails are NOT received, and any emails composed at this time are NOT sent. Waiting does nothing - the app stays in this useless state.

Closing the app requires a Force Quit. At first, re-opening the app would solve all the problems, and it would behave normally. Now, more often than not, it requires TWO Force Quit/restarts to get the app to load and function properly.

What is the deal here? This is getting really frustrating...please help!

What you are experiencing does not sound normal. At least, I have not seen the issue you are describing. There may be something you have installed that is contributing to the issue you are seeing.

A couple of things to try:

1. Perform Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility app and reboot.
2. Open System Preferences->Users & Groups>Login Items tab. Remove all items listed, reboot and log back in.

Does it still hang if you disconnect from the network?

Not a yosemite issue, but I've had the mail hang in a similar way when it's checking the message are still ok (syncing). That's for IMAP where I have a few clients that read the same mail.

What mail service are you using? and IMAP or POP?

I am experiencing a similar situation with a late 2013 Imac with 10.10.5. I am IMAP from TWC. It will happen when I put in sleep mode or goes in hard sleep, the app just freezes, always force quit is required. Sometimes it works and sometimes it requires either multiple force quits or restart as of late.
This Mail program is driving me crazy. Have been working with Applecare for weeks on a bunch of things. Tier 2 on this issue for almost 3 weeks

I have had disappearing emails, drafts that suddenly appear for no reason, messages that won't delete, etc. Tier two applecare has no idea. They have taken data samples and nothing. I was fine for 10 years using Thunderbird, until it imploded on 10.10.4. I believe the long range solution is mailbox or Mail pilot or something like them.

I know saving drafts on the server is a pain, it cause me all kinds of grief. Now it only saves drafts locally.

How much mail are you trying to sync?
Too much in the inbox can cause problems.

I was fine for 10 years using Thunderbird, until it imploded on 10.10.4.

What happened to thunderbird in 10.10.4? I'm currently on that version of Yosemite using thunderbird w/o any probs. I've actually been using it since 10.7 and not one crash.

I am casual user these days, so its read and delete or put in a folder. My mail ner sits in a folder for more than a day.

I had been using TB since 2005 with virtually no issues, bulletproof. When I did .4 it literally froze 95%, with disappearing menu bars. Every few day , when Mail kills me, I try to reload TB. It literally won't work. Don't know why

Let me ask a question. Going to Vex's question about sync. When I converted to Mail from TB, It took my sent file and created a local called "sent" with 4K entries even though most of these came already deleted sent files, could this be an issue???

I did the "repair permissions" procedure, as well as "rebuilt" the mailbox with no change in app behavior. However, it seems this may be an IMAP mailbox issue that causes the problem. I deleted all my IMAP (gmail) mailboxes, and then re-added them, and so far Mail is finally behaving normally again. If it goes for another few days without incident, I'm going to consider this to be the solution.

I'm having the exact same problem as the OP. Prior to today, I was able to force quit and relaunch mail to get it to work. That didn't work this morning, so thanks to the OP's IMAP theory, I went into preferences, found the 'enable this account' setting and unchecked 5 of my 6 accounts (basically everything except iCloud). Mail loaded the iCloud account emails properly so I added the other accounts one at a time. So far, so good. Maybe El Capitan will fix this mess.
