Yosemite & MBP 13 (Mid-2012)

Hello everyone.
I have already read some threads about the Yosemite' performance.

I have a Macbook Pro 13", Mid-2012, 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM & Intel HD4000.

Since updating to Yosemite, I notice the entire performance is VERY slow, specially with Safari & Mail. Safari lags are absolutely annoying, freezing all the apps. The same happens with Mail.

I though, initially, this lag happened because of the caches, spotlight, etc. and I was hoping it would get better day by day. But I can't seem to experience less lag than before.

Working with SPSS, Microsoft Word, some PDF's open & Safari... mission impossible.

Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM? I never though about that, because I never felt the need to do it.

Is this happening with other people, too?

Do you have a HD or SSD? I have that same machine and have a SSD and it seems to be running just fine, was slow in the beginning but like you said I attributed that to Spotlight.

I do have an HD. The experience overall decreased a lot, comparing to Mavericks. I already disabled Spotlight, since I don't make use of it. It's really painful trying to do some tasks with my Mac; I never ever thought I would be complaining about the OS X performance. But... here I am.

I hear you, I finally broke down and got a SSD because I felt that Mavericks did that to mine, once I got it installed it made my Mac feel better than brand new. If you can swing it I highly suggest getting one.

Try a clean install and let us know. The HD 4000 is a supported OpenCL video chipset, so Safari should be buttery smooth. An SSD seems essential nowadays - I create Fusion Drives in MacBook Pros by replacing the SuperDrive with an SSD.

When I bought the computer (somewhere near September 2012), the HD was the primary option for Mac's back then, since the SSD made the price much more expensive.

When I was at the Apple Store (here in Portugal we don't have Official Apple Stores, just premium resellers...), the seller made me all kind of questions about the usage, what was important for me to work with, etc. and we recommended me buying a Macbook Air (with SSD); but, not for me, since I don't appreciate the design at all.

Then, he suggested me to buy a Macbook Pro with SSD since the difference was so big, comparing to HD. But the price was too much expensive for me and I would lose some disk space, because SSD 256gb was the less expensive option.

Do you think the SSD makes the difference at this kind of problems? I was expecting not to worry about buying a new computer at least for 5 years, so, around 2016/17; is the SSD worth the investment for the next years?
