Yosemite on 2011 MBP

I signed up for the public beta programme as soon as it was announced, this will be the first time I've ever used a beta (public or otherwise). I'm planning on installing Yosemite on my 2011 MBP, simply because it isn't my main machine, but with it being a 2011 model i'm wondering if there will be many problems? also is backing up to Time Machine enough? I've seen people mention creating a separate partition to install Yosemite (again something I've never done before).

I'm guessing very shortly these forums will be inundated with non developers asking questions related to the public release of Yosemite beta.

You all have to ask yourself:

1. Do I care if I lose every bit of information on the drive you install this on.
2. Do I know enough about computing to make it worthwhile evaluating a new operating system which will have bugs.
3. Do I have the time or inclination to utilise the feedback tool provided by Apple in this beta to upload useful information for Apple to improve and repair any issues found.

If you answer no to anyone of these questions, i'd suggest you wait until it is officially released later this year. If you ignore this, be prepared to be flamed, ridiculed and laughed at, when you suffer data loss and technical hitches.

Yes, and the contents of this thread deserves a sticky. If you don't know enough to provide useful feedback to Apple about bugs then there is no reason for you to install the public beta of Yosemite.

I'm sure i can mange to send bug reports and feedback to Apple, my original point was regarding the 2011 Macbook Pro.

No, there wont be any specific problems, a 2011 model MacBook Pro is still essentially the same as the classic MacBook Pros they're selling now. There will be nothing unusual that anyone else wont be seeing and your hardware is more than fast enough.

Thank you, i've done a full Time Machine backup in case anything goes wrong.

Has anyone been able to get SMS texting or phone calls working on 2011 MacBook Pros? I know Handoff/Continuity isn't compatible, but SMS and phone calls are, though I'm not sure if they've been disabled for the public beta...

And yes, I know there are other threads, but I'm talking about the 2011 (or earlier) MBPs specifically, and in regards to these two features. Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind, saw on the Beta page that iOS 8 is required... alas.

I just installed the public beta on my Macbook Air of the same year as your Pro. I just installed over Mavericks. Even though this is my main machine I figured if things went bad I could always go back to Mavericks and I have plenty of Time Machine backups.

I have installed the public beta over Mavericks on my MBP, its not my main machine, and i don't plan on putting the public beta on my iMac. I've also backed everything up and also done a Time Machine back up. I have to say i'm loving OSX Yosemite so far, the new look alone makes it feel like a new OSX.
