Bit of a naive question but seeing as I have only had my Mac Pro for a year I am wondering with the new OS whether there would be any change in speed? For example does Yosemite use more resources and would this effect how fast it would be for editing?

I apologize if it is a stupid question.

Any significant improvements are likely to be associated with your current editing software or when it gets upgraded to take advantage of new OS enhancements or features.

Major OS upgrades typically do not improve application performance. OS upgrades can on the other hand improve your productivity in various ways which is another aspect of performance.

Actually a good question. From my experiences with OS updates, there are no speed improvements on various apps. The other advantage of newer OS is they may have more, newer GPU or other drivers than the old OS.

My nMP performance is bit better in Yosemite.

On my cMP with a really slow graphics card it is quite a bit slower than 10.9. Being faster on a nMP and slower on machines with dates graphics might point to more GPU implementation / GPU dependency?

I think that 10.10 needs at least one, or two, releases to fix some of these performance issues. I am seeing a couple here and there.

I know what you mean, but somehow, even with some jerkiness on my GT120 (pushing a 30" and a 24"!), it feels 'better' somehow... hard to explain!

Still, can't wait to be able to grab a 'modern' AMD...

Expose/mission control etc is *extremely* jerky. It wasn't when i first installed...

You shouldn't see any significant performance changes but I'd perhaps hold off until whichever apps you use for editing are confirmed to be fully working with Yosemite.
