Yosemite Update From Snow Leopard

Going to give this a try today, have a few questions as I have not updated my OS before since owning my MacBook Pro.

(1) Do I need to write down any internet settings etc. I currently connect to cable using Airport, do all the current settings remain unchanged to get online after the update?

(2) As a photographer I use iPhoto often, will this still work after the update?

(3) As far as other apps I use, is there a list online of apps that do or don't work when going from SL to Yosemite.

(4) Will my currently installed printer still work?

Other they using Disk Utility to Repair Hard Drives and Disk Permissions; checking for any updates (doubt there is any), & doing a backup it seems straight forward. Thanks for any info or tips.

If you download the update from the Mac App Store, OS X updates nowadays are extremely pleasant to do.

(1) No - all settings will be carried across.

(2) From the MAS you'll get Yosemite 10.10.3, which gives you the all new (somewhat controversial) Photos app. You'll still be able to use iPhoto, but you may have to put it back in your dock if it disappears.

(3) Yosemite's been out long enough now that I'd have thought the only incompatible apps would be obscure "system tweaking" apps with no ongoing development. Can't make any concrete promises there though...

(4) Again, can't make promises without knowing the model/manufacturer, but I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't.

The only other thing I'd say to watch out for is the progress bar and "Time remaining". The Yosemite installer (at least for 10.10.0) has a tendency to sit at "1 minute remaining..." for half an hour. Just let it do it's thing and don't worry about the progress bar.

Another little word of warning: If your system came with SL then it probably has a magnetic drive. After upgrading, the system will likely feel slow for some time as it "does stuff", but it will eventually settle down.

Out of interest, If you upgrade to Yosemite from SL, don't you lose GarageBand, iMovie, iDVD etc too?

No--you don't lose anything. I upgraded to Mavericks from SL and still have everything, including iWeb.
