Yosemite vs Word for Mac 11 vs Dropbox

I recently purchased a new iMac 27" with Yosemite. I encounter a problem when I import a jpeg from a Dropbox folder into Word for Mac 2011. Word freezes or becomes very slow to respond, the activity monitor shows Word at greater that 100% CPU time.

I've deleted and reloaded Word, verified I have all the latest versions of Word and Yosemite and tested all the memories. If I put the same jpeg file on the desktop and import to Word there is no problem.

I've had 2 calls with Apple and one visit to a Genius Bar with no solution. The Genius Bar guy suggested there is a problem that seems to be Yosemite running Word for Mac 2011 accessing Dropbox.

Sorry if this is already reported but I'm at a loss for a solution.

seriously, why not just bring the jpeg onto the desktop? or create a folder (on the desktop, for example) to work with (for jpegs you need in word?).

unless someone else has this issue, and/or knows a simple solution...you'd probably get more done with a workaround than chasing the problem.

just a thought.

As a consultant I work from my iMac and my Mac Book Pro all synced via Dropbox. If it was as simple a one jpeg I would agree but I have thousands of documents and graphics that I need to transport with me.

I wish the solution was that simple.

The Genius Bar guy suggested there is a problem that seems to be Yosemite running Word for Mac 2011 accessing Dropbox.

What an outstanding diagnosis! That is exactly what you told him....

I've not had exactly this issue but I have had a problem with runaway Dropbox CPU usage - which if you have that may impact Word accessing the DB files.

The fix was eventually a FULL reinstall of Dropbox, including trashing the hidden folder (~/.dropbox from memory but details on the Dropbox website), this was an issue only on my MBP, my iMac and Mac Mini had no issues with the same Dropbox App version.

You might find it worth trying a full remove and reinstall of Dropbox.

I think his suggestion was just to copy the files onto the desktop as you needed them.

Fortunately I have not installed Yosemite on my mac book. It runs OK.

Once my current deadlines have passed, I'll try the Dropbox reinstall.

simonsi might be on to something; seems no one else is reporting the issue, so probably not specifically OS/app related.

for now, can't you copy those images to a folder on the desktop? at least you could work around the issue for now.

I don't really understand how posting about bugs in third-party software on the OS X subforms is going to help anyone. Why not contact Microsoft and ask them to fix Office?
