Hi,

whenever there is a breakthrough in tech there is always that one guy who is denying the claim and is throwing stuff on a successor. I dug up an article from PCWorld which was released right after M1 was put on shelves:

and seems to be just that. A defender of well-established status quo too blind to see the feature.

Maybe a good story for a MacRoumors front page :)

A few people on these forums like to do this too ? but I guess Apple got the memo and decided to actually state what PC computers they used in their comparisons test this round.

I said this before in another thread, but Apple as of recently has been conservative with their claims. They know there’s going to be 100 YouTube channels, tech blogs, and reviewers that will perform a myriad of tests over the next month to fact-check Apple on everything they said yesterday. So it’s in their best interest to be slightly conservative.

Over here
To be fair he is mostly right but also Apple was not technically wrong about their claims. How you set the test conditions to get to 98% is relevant. Is it truly reflective of reality? No.

At the end of the day, marketing is about selling to the customer that just sees a 'fact' or a figure and accepts it. I am sure if he dug around some PC makers with the same tenacity he would find the same questionable claims.

If you want real salt, read Linus Tech Tips YouTube comments or comments on any Apple article on WCCFtech.

There I learned that:
1. Apple Silicon isn’t impressive compared to an R9 5900X or 12000 series i9, and a 3090 gpu.

2. Performance per transistor is a valid metric

3. Nobody makes programs for Apple and never will ever

4. Gaming is the only intensive program that matters

5. Next year Intel will blow everyone out of the water

6. And other hilarious nonsense.

Right, so I see this pretty much the same as when Steve Ballmer said that iPhone will not fly cuz it ain't have a keyboard. What I'm commenting on is that incredible arrogance of PC world influencers. 100 times proven wrong but still standing. Like Intel CEO making a comment about "Lifestyle company from Cupertino" making chips.

I bet Apple marketing ppl knew they will pick on those graphs and start commenting just to be proven wrong. I remember that previous keynotes were more detailed and precise.

as for Linus I also saw ZDNet article from 24.10.2020 which was right after MBs were released:

"I've been waiting for an ARM laptop that can run Linux for a long time. The new Air would be almost perfect, except for the OS. And I don't have the time to tinker with it, or the inclination to fight companies that don't want to help."
