Well, I've got a few files, like when I downloaded messenger, there's a file called Messenger602.dmg. What I wanted to know is if there's a way to delete those...well maybe not delete but make so that they don't show up on the Desktop. I've got a few of those .dmg files...

drag them to trash to eject them OR use CMD E

After the file is expanded and the application installed, there is no problem in deleting the .dmg file. I prefer to transfer them to my flash drive if I ever need to reinstall the application.
The DMG is just a way to distribute the program. When you get one, you should open it and copy the application inside to the Applications folder on your hard drive. You can then eject the disk image and delete the DMG file.
I've tried dragging them to trash but it says a message they it cannot be trashed because it's in used...but I've quit the application.
1) Make sure you've ejected the disk image before you try to trash the .dmg
2) You might want to create a new folder just for downloads and specify that your browser/other apps send your downloads there...it'll keep your desktop more tidy.
After the dmg "opens" itself it puts a rectangular-like icon on your desktop with the program inside of it. So first you must eject that before you can delete the dmg. I'm assuming you've been running msn messenger straight from that part of the icon. If that's the case, double click on the dmg, then messenger icon should pop open in a new window. Drag that messenger icon into applications. Then now you can "eject" the mounted volume which is that rectangular like disk that spawned from the dmg, then now you can delete the dmg..

Second part first...that's because under Preferences in each application that downloads stuff (either Safari, Firefox, and torrent clients if you have those) you'll have a preference as to where it want to download the files. You can create a new folder in your user folder and then direct your applications to send the files there by changing the preferences for each app.
As to #1. When you open the .dmg file, it will mount a disk image (that will appear on your desktop and in the sidebar of your finder windows, it will usually look a little like an old school disk drive). So, after you have copied the application from the disk image to your Applications folder, you need to eject the "mounted" disk image (drag to trash or hit the eject button next to it in the sidebar), then you can trash the .dmg file.
