I was getting my phone swapped out and long story short the Genius put the new "blank" SIM in my old phone and he could pull up the home screen. It didn't list any SIM info in the top bar, but it went past the activation screen and was a presumably functional phone-less iPod. Not sure what this means to everyone trying to hack the pod, but the Genius had never seen that before. I wonder if you could just drop a blank SIM (maybe generic, or maybe ATT only) in a previously used iPhone to get past the initial screen.

That's all the info I have on it.

I was under the impression that the AT&T "3G" marked SIMs were not special in any substantial sort of way, but had some special block of identity strings or something that allowed them to work with iPhones? The new "blank" SIM the Genius used is most likely another one of the special-in-whatever-way "3G" SIMs from AT&T.

I know people tried other SIMs in the iPhone without activating them... surely someone else has tried after activating by now?
