Dear All,

I recently updated my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013, 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB / NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB, 500GB SSD) to Big Sur and since then, every time I restart the machine I get an error message advising me that I turned the machine off because of a problem. The machine also beach-balls on wakeup while the login screen finishes loading. Occasionally I get a few-millisecond glimpse of a "TV static" screen while the device is restarting or when waking. This problem exists whether or not WiFi / Bluetooth are enabled. I have already reinstalled the OS via Recovery. None of these problems existed before Big Sur.

How do I go about working out what the problem is? Is there a log I can view? Part of me is tempted to just wipe the SSD and start again, but I am concerned that there may be a hardware (eg graphics card compatibility) rather than a software issue.

Thoughts appreciated.

Regards,
Droid13

i was getting this message regularly, after a normal restart (and only on one of my macs), in 11.2. on the 11.3 beta, the problem is no longer happening. think it's an error (the message happening at all, not the message itself), and should (hopefully) be fixed for you with 11.3 (or currently, if you're on the beta program). not sure, tho, about the other issues...

Look @ the panic.log (viewable via Console). I had the same machine as you, and experienced the same issues - It turned out to be the logic board. At the time, it was covered under AppleCare. I ended up encountering repeat failures, so Apple replaced it under warranty (classified as a Repeat Repair) with my current 2018 model. I really hope it isn’t the GPU starting to fail…

There was an extended warranty on the 750M GT specifically. If it turns out to be the GPU, you might try calling AppleCare and seeing if they’ll replace your board for free under the service campaign.

I do not seem to have a panic.log; will give Apple a call anyway and see what happens. I wasn't happy to see the "TV static" appearance...

EDIT: I did find something called shutdown_stall though. Unintelligible.
