Yes. I stream everything wirelessly from an external hard drive connected to my MBP and it works beautifully.

you think?

Of course, they tested it throughly in their labs.

Your living room looks like this, right?

Good, then you're good to go.

What's your average download and upload speed? And what kind of content do you stream? HD movies?

I was talking about streaming from my Mac to my AppleTV, not about over the internet. My speeds are good there - 15 down and about 3 up.

I do stream 720P content and it works great. Standard definition is flawless. The only problems I have are fast forwarding and rewinding which is more a function of the laggy ATV remote and the slower processor. Otherwise I couldn't be happier. The only reason I am thinking about getting the new ATV is for the Netflix streaming.

does having more RAM effect the speed? 4 is enough?

yeah, you know, I've had an old macbook pro setup on my tv to stream movies from my mac pro in the office to the living room using front row on the mbp. I think the reason I came by here to read this forum is that I am interested in the appleTv to finally replace and offload the old mbp, but I find it odd that the tag line for the new appleTv says stream "iTunes music and photos from your computer" but no mention of movies or TV shows or video content from your computer. It gives me a slight pause. Now, I know they are simply trying to keep you from having the idea to do it if you haven't already (so you rent/dl it all instead), but certainly if its in itunes, you can play it on the new appletv regardless if its video or music. Right? Right?

Plus, would you be able to link to content in the "movies" folder on your mac in the other room like you can in front row currently?

You can stream any media to your Apple TV as it is in your iTunes library.
For anything else you need to patch your Apple TV (thats how it works with the old Apple TV).

@topic
I am streaming all my movies and TV shows via draft-n wlan to my Apple TV. No problem at all (yet) - even (fast) forwarding is possible without laggs. (I am using the internal hard drive for music and pictures only (so that i do not have to power up my mac to listen to music in the living room)

my network has some issues streaming now, at least when HD content is involved, but I can't figure if its the older processor in the ATV (160gb) that I have, or my network...SD is flawless...

I too noticed that and am curious because I don't want to stream from my iPhone or iPad I want to stream movies from my iTunes on my Mac directly to my TV without going through iOS.

I plan an contacting Apple about this after the weekend.

If it's on your iPhone or iPad it'll be in iTunes, and you will be able to stream from iTunes on your Mac to :apple:TV

That's good to know. Thanks. I just don't see why Apple would put only music and photos on the Apple TV website.

Because Apple is not going to promote the fact that you can rip all your DVDs and Blu Rays and then play them on your Apple TV. And they are not going to promote the fact that you can download torrented movies and TV shows and stream them to your Apple TV.

Not that anyone would be interested in doing that of course. ;)
