Its Google. They're going to take forever to make a decent YouTube app, let along add new features.

I think only Apple apps use splitview though, not like others are embracing it excitingly.

I agree. I also think YouTube supporting Picture in Picture will be a long ways off, if it is supported at all.

Actually, other apps have started updating for split view since the day before the public release.

Google will most likely take their sweet time with updating the YouTube app for iOS on the iPad. This is similar to how Google doesn't update their Google+ application to match its Android counterpart until months after each other. It is sad that one of the most anticipated applications for this feature, will most likely not get this new feature for a very long time.

Plenty of the apps I use have been updated for split view. Main one I'm waiting for is Infuse (video player). BBC iPlayer can do the pop out video now pleasingly.

Doesn't PIP make more sense than split view, given the 16:9 ratio of most video content?

I guess in theory, you could run youtube in a browser and split-screen it.

On the contrary. Twitter, PCalc, and all of the Microsoft apps (Outlook, OneNote, Word, Excel, Powerpoint) were all updated for multi-tasking on day one. The side panel is already getting crowded.

But I don't expect much from Google.

I wish YouTube would support split screen and picture in picture but given the iOS YouTube app's track record, it would probably take months for them to implement it

But then no we can't. The YouTube website won't allow us to go full screen into apples video controller which supports PiP. However, we can with YouTube videos embedded in websites. And it's not very easy getting into their website in the first place. They want you to use the app, and be miserable.
Nothing's more terrible than the inconsistency of material design.
