hey, yesterday I ordered a 17" Macbook Pro. Looking forward to its arrival, though it looks like I may to be patient.
I ordered over the phone, and the very friendly phone sales person offered me a good price on applecare. I'm a student, at they offer 3 year apple care for about £50 (around 94USD) - and since this price was only available only on initial purchase, I thought it made sense to go ahead with it.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience in using applecare to repair / replace their machine.
cheers

Afraid not, i've only had experience with the normal apple support. I hope you get decent support with applecare, I certainly didn't with the normal support. Hopefully having applecare means you get half decent support.

I recommend it!

I can give you a very good example - I'm literally just off the phone with Applecare

My Airport Express seems to have stopped working, the ethernet port seems to be dead. It's about 18 months old. I called Applecare and spent a while on the phone with the first-line Tech guy and we ran through some troubleshooters. When that failed, he transferred me through to a product specialist who had me run through a few more checks.

Once we established that the ethernet port is indeed dead, he immediately arranged a replacement to be shipped to me with a pre-paid postage label included in the package.

Even though the Airport Express itself is out of warranty, the fact I had Applecare on my machine meant that it was covered also.

I've also had a Power Adapter replaced after the initial 1 year warranty period with no hassle whatsoever.

Applecare is a very worthwhile investment, it pays for itself should you ever need to use it over the course of the three years.

Over a year ago my DVD-ROM died on my iBook and using AppleCare went really smoothly. I called Apple and spent about 20 minutes on the phone troubleshooting, then he said a box was on the way. I sent it in and got it back about 5 days later with it working!

AppleCare sucks, they weren't eager to give warranty on my three month old MacMini (power issues). Really bad service. Now that I read they offer AppleCare for 50pound... while I had to pay the big buck last week.

Applecare doesn't suck, there are enough stories around by people who basically got free new computers, all thanks to Applecare.

Will these people be able to get Applecare on their replacement computers? :p

Apple Care is what it is...

I had a experience with Apple Care with my iPod Video. I went into the store and made an appointment with an Apple Genius. My iPod would no longer take a decent charge.

The Apple Genius told me that was a normal ware and tear on the product. I told him the sole reason I got Apple Care was for battery issues. Issisted that he check the iPod. He told me that I would have to leave and they would run some tests. I told him fine do it. After 3 days I called and they told me to come in and get a new iPod. You just have to be persistant...;)

I thought about Applecare for sometime, but instead I'm looking into a floater insurance policy. Depending on your plan, they will cover repairs.

For $94 USD, get it!!! The MBP applecare, even with student discount is $349CDN (about $300 USD).

Whoops, just re-read ur question, you got it, good!

Anyways I haven't had any problems yet with my MB or my old 12" Powerbook but the times I've had to call for information or see them at the Apple store, the people have been very helpful. You should be happy with their service!

Yes, $94 is a very good price! The "regular" US price is $349/$249 student discount.

I've used AppleCare on several notebooks, and it only takes 1 repair on a notebook to break even. And if it's a screen replacement, it can run $1000 (if you get it done by Apple, instead of another repair facility, or, for the brave, replacing it yourself after buying a replacement screen on eBay! )

Experience with AppleCare can be variable, but mine has always been good. If you get a less-than-helpful tech support person, you can often call right back and get a different tech, who is often more helpful (charitable?) and may give you a more satisfactory response. (My TiBook's battery was rapidly going bad toward the end of its 3-year AppleCare - the first tech person told me that it wasn't covered, and 20 minutes later, the next tech support ordered a replacement battery to be express shipped to me!) As always, be firm, yet respectful, and you'll get a lot further than being angry and out-of-control!
