"Your iCloud storage will be reduced to 5 GB on 30/09/2012" -- what to do?

I got this email from  today. Problem is I'm on OSX 10.6.8, and "iCloud" isn't on my System preferences panel. So how can I upgrade or downgrade without having to upgrade to the latest Mac OS?

Also how do I check how much storage I'm using?

I only use mail. and nothing else.

I have had the problem where I'm being told I need to reduce what I have in there.

Ironic considering I can't get any of my devices to back up to it and haven't been able to do so for weeks.

I don't know what to do to free up the space /

I got this e-mail too this morning

Having checked, most of my storage is taken up with backups for iPhone and iPad. Have set the iPad to backup locally and iPhone (minus camera roll) to backup to iCloud.

Back under 5GB as have no plans to pay Apple another £28/year for 25GB

When I check iCloud it errors on me

Everything Ihave in iCloud refuses to open and let me "manage" it.... Wondering if there is some bit problem in the cloud.

Free gets you a lot.
When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. And that’s plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content. Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, and TV shows — as well as your Photo Stream — don’t count against your free storage. That 5GB goes a long way for your mail, documents, account information, settings, and other app data. And if you need more storage, you can easily purchase an upgrade right from your device.

I got the same email. I'm trying to figure out what I've got on there that's taking up space if all that's free. I don't have any documents other than a few PDF manuals in iBooks. I supposedly have 10gb of something. My iPad backup says 6gb and my iPhone backup says 2gb. I'm guessing backups aren't part of the "don’t count against your free storage".

I have no need for the 40gb so I guess my only option is to do like the crazy badger and back the iPad up to iTunes.

Got my backups working again, but I didnt want to pay for 25gb..... But I realised I'm obviously not paying for mobileme anymore, so I downgraded to 10gb (15gb with the 5 free), for about £14 a year, considering I was paying £35 a year for mobileme, Ill put the other £20 toward itunes match

I came across this in my iCloud settings.

On the one hand we're told iCloud will drop to 5GB on 30/09/12.

Seems I'm still on 25GB, and will not expire until 30/09/50. YES, 2050!

Wonder how long before they spot that and downgrade me.

I'm not being billed either.
