The Great White North
I am curious what others who are sitting on the fence over getting an iPad are looking for/want from the iPad before they get one. Here is my short list of must haves that would make me rush out to get one tomorrow (instead of waiting a while since I will get by Christmas at the latest I imagine).

1 - A near lag-free iTunes remote app. I have used the one for the iPod Touch and it isn't bad, but the lag is really a drawback. I am not sure if this can easily be fixed (perhaps if it communicated via bluetooth instead of airport this would solve the problem, which I am not sure if the iPad does). This would make listening to music on my stereo during those times when I didn't want to change CD's or records all the time a great experience.

2 - Access to all media on my computer/network (or at the very least media on my iTunes such as movies, TV shows, etc). Basically an iTunes remote that could also handle video. A bonus would be an Apple TV remote, or an interface similar to Apple TV (big font, simple headings, nothing complex). The second part I don't really expect anytime soon, though I do hope that iTunes/Apple TV heads into a bold direction (as it could if it can start to secure media deals) in the next few years.

3 - Ability to use the iPad as a desktop extension. And not just as extra monitor space, but something that really capitalizes on the touch screen capabilities. Perhaps having it as a permanent expose space (this would be fantastic when you are working on multi-window projects where you are constantly going from one to the other), or a place to put toolbars so you could easily select tools (imagine photo-editing or layout design where you can have all your toolbar buttons handy at the touch of a finger).

There could always be something I haven't even thought of that compels me to get an iPad but for the moment those are the things I will be watching out for.

Edit: This is not meant to be a 'lets bash the iPad' thread, I think its a great device. But no doubt there are lots of people, like me, who are waiting for that 'something' before they will get it.

1) Increase the RAM. 256mb is fine for it's current advertised capabilities, but it doesn't seem very future-proof to me at all. I think a 512mb version would have a chance to be fairly up to date for a few years.

2) Improve the OS more for the larger screen. A better home screen, lock screen, and notifications system that doesn't interrupt you with a modal popup window every time you get an IM. (I would imagine that some of these are coming in OS 4.0)

3) Textbook publishers release good apps for reading, highlighting, searching, and note taking and provide a large enough selection of textbooks for me to justify the purchase.

Make putting documents on iPad intuitive

Come on! Just give me a local folder on iPad to toss all my documents in. I hate this app by app basis thing. And when I can have a simple way to put documents on iPad, make 'em sync back automatically!

Well, it's not a deal-breaker because I already have a 3G on order and I'm increasingly looking forward to using it.

However, if I didn't have a need/want for the iPad's media-browsing prowess right now, the deal breakers for me might be (in no particular order)....
  • forward facing camera for video conferencing (Skype)
  • USB port for data transfer
  • multitasking of some kind (Expose-like would be fine)
  • SOME kind of a filing system

I know the thing can't multi-task so I won't go there. All i will say is if a developer made an app which put Safari and an IM client side by side, or contained within a single app (think buttons on the bottom to switch between your browser and active chats / buddy list) I'd by the iPad tomorrow.

We also need a better homescreen. Taking the same concept from the iPhone and slapping it onto the iPad seems lazy to me.

When they lower the price from $749 for the one i like to at least $450.

Since i dont have much of a need for one, no way id pay what they are priced at. I paid way less for my laptop.

All I want is a higher resolution screen. I like sharp text!

Same goes for the macbook pro 15" and current iphone

In my radar:

27" iMac
4th gen iphone with 960*640 resolution screen (please let it be true)

Ive been thinking bout this the last few weeks basically what I do on my computer at t he moment mainly is Internet which basically is doing browsing a few sites here and there and Hulu Email Facebook/Twitter now. i Have a old pc that i can use for the iTunes portion to store the stuff there Now once hulu puts out a app for hulu id consider replacing my mini as my main cpu

How about four finger swipe up = shows the home screen. Four finger swipe down shows you all open apps. Four fingers means not too much chance of accidentally doing gesture, and its familiar to macbook multitouch users. Too bad the 4 fingers wouldn't be as practical for iphone though

1. Camera on the back at least.
2. The RAM please make it higher. I've already seen many people with apps saying something along the lines of "Ooops! Ran out of RAM, reset your iPad"

I don't care for USB because quite frankly, the iPad is not a notebook replacement.

Slightly bigger screen (so they can fit in a slightly bigger keyboard so you dont have to go to the alternate screen for quotes) haptic keyboard, multitasking.

...with an iMac, 2 PC desktops, 2 PC laptops, a macbook and an iPod Touch the iPad just isn't screaming buy me yet... maybe by the 2nd Gen I'll change my mind after I can use one for a couple days...

Wish list:

- physical keyboard (slide-out)
- antenna for my favourite radio station
- bigger speakers (maybe on back protruding like fly's eyes)
- different colours (cyan my favourite)
- floppy disk support

The ability to print directly from the iPad to my network connected (AirPort Extreme connected) printer, without emailing to my computer to print.

Two-finger scrolling on my old MacBook Pro is the extent of my current gesturing capability, so a lack of 4-finger stuff isn't something I'd miss.
