your opinion: October 12th, 2005

[macOSX-tastic]

thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for your pesrsonal opinion on the events on today, and how it has affected your buying/waiting plans. talk about what ever product is relavent to you.

so here we go...

iPod:::i like the new form factor, but wont be totally convinced unto i see them at macexpo olympia at the end of the month/ at the apple store.

a few things i have noticed:

they have removed the port next to the headphone jack, which now means you cannot use the following:

iTrip
iTalk
AirCLick
and all other accessories that use this specific feature.

now the companies will have to figure out a way to get their products to work with the new ipods. this will hopefully mean that we will be able to use them on a wider variety of devices too, but we are gonna have to wait.

i very much like the new design, and hope it pleases me in the flesh......but i wont be buying one until my current 30GB photo snuffs it, thats for sure....£219 is not worth the price for playing videos for me, not just yet.....as well as there being no tv shows (apart from the pixar ones) in the UK store currently.

apple's other announcement (imac) pleases me very much, and will probably sway me from purchasing a home entertainments centre and just go for the imac and an eyeTV for the living/bedroom, unless i can get front row for my powerbook someday.

I as well as bunch of Mac users (I'm sure) are very disappointed that there's still no update on Powerbook or PowerMac.
Not that I'm buying one of those anyway, but considering PC technology is way ahead of us, figure Apple would do something about it.

i feel the same exact way. if i knew the pb's would not be updated for another 6 months, i'd buy a current 17" and be done with it. but updates are imminent from what we can tell, which is why we continue to wait.

Yays:
1)Everything about the new iMac.
2) Video iPods with TV-out. Good pricing.

Boos:

1) No way to rip DVD's onto the iPod. Come on Apple, even if I have to put up with a DRM that doesn't let me copy it onto ANYTHING but an iPod and only lets it play on ONE computer, find some way to let me do it!

2) No Smallville downloads. They play it on ABC Family...though it's technically a WB show.

3) No way to burn episodes to a VCD or DVD.

Can't you just rip a DVD using something like "Mac the Ripper" and then just stick it on the ipod? Or can you only play stuff from the music store?

You should be able to do this in MPEG4 or H.264 presuming you stay within the resolution and bitrate limitations.

I'm a bit surprised it doesn't also happen to support 320x240 VCD (MPEG-1) and 480x480 SVCD (MPEG-2) as well.The hardware is probably fully capable of it, they just chose not to support it.

Have Apple specifically locked out video content that hasn't been purchased from the iTMS? If not, the new iPod supports video encoded with mp4 and H.264, so you should be able to use HandBrake to convert your DVDs into one of these formats.

I LOVE the new iMac, and I'm having a hard time keeping myself from buying one. I'm less impressed by the video iPod. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I just can't really see myself watching video unless I'm at home, especially with such a small screen. I find it weird that they went to iTunes 6 so quickly. iTunes 4.x was around FOREVER in comparison to 5, which only lasted a month or so. The update seems really insubstantial too. The only added functionality is the videos section in the source list. The rest of the update consist of changes to the iTMS. Even later versions of 4 supported video, so I don't quite see why video in iTMS was considered substantial enough to go all the way to 6.

also note the info bar in itunes 6 has lost its 'glossy' glass look and gone for a more aqua style.
