Hello all,

First off I am by no means a professional designer. However, our church has asked that I create a banner for our 2009 theme. This will be a large banner that hangs in the auditorium.

The theme is "Laying it all on the line in 2009". The theme is the result of 2009 hopefully being the biggest year in the church's 30+ years history. Since the theme is laying it on the line I got to idea to use a timeline that shows significant events in the church's past and to have 2009 stand out at the biggest yet. I am not sure how successfully I have pulled this off.

Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. I am open to any suggestions ranging from fonts and colors all the way to it stinks back to the drawing board. Thanks for any help you can give.

Its a nice design, but there are several things that stick out to me. There are too many spaces between the years, ie; 1998-2009, 1988-1996, etc.
Also, i think that you need a different colour scheme that screams out THE BEST YEAR EVER, or whatnot. Maybe black for the timeline, and maybe red or something for 2009 and the font. What colour is the background going to be?
Just a suggestion

Thanks for the reply, the background will be white. As to the spacing for the numbers do you mean that the spacing doesn't look even for the missing years you are probably right, this was just a quick mock-up and I didn't measure out the spacing just did it roughly by eye. If you mean that there are not enough years I am kind of stuck there, I am using years that monumental events occurred in the history of the church. I unfortunately can't make up any monumental events for any other years.

ok, ithat makes sense. I thought you were just adding random years on the banner.

I think Cyclone is right. The years can be more evenly spaced even though it isn't technically correct. You are just mentioning the years of importance, right? Like a list... unless you listed all the years (much longer or smaller) and just bolded the years of importance.

Got a nicer font? Myriad looks a bit weedy in this instance. Caps could look better too.

The design is too straight and a bit boring. How about a curve - if you imagine a tape measure effect, curling in the foreground. It would give it some depth.

Very good idea, maybe bolder type?

AlexisV makes a good suggestion in giving it depth, maybe even put the line at an angle, but keep the years and title straight?

just something to try out... on a large print banner, try a serif font? Minion Pro or something of the like?

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions. I will definitely try it with different fonts and colors. I like the idea of adding some depth to it but am afraid that will exceed my limitations (I am the IT guy that made the mistake of learning the very basics of illustrator years ago).
