TLDR: Tried to renew AC+ that expired last month but I can't at all after calling Apple support. Bought it 3 years ago from Swappa and already had 3 years of AC+.

This is a big predicament for me.

I got this 2021 Macbook Pro second hand 3 years ago with AppleCare+ that expired on February 9th 2025. I just got off the phone with Apple Support, I never got the notice to renew it. They spent ~10 mins talking to an advisor and got back to me saying that if I never got the notice (which I didn't even right after February 9th) then that means I can't renew it, you only might be able to renew it and they can't determine beforehand if you can.

After purchasing it in 2022 I called Apple Support 2 times asking if I would get a notice to renew it once it expires in 2025, one representative said they don't know and another said yes. I hoped for the best.

I've had to use it too, so now I'm SOL?! I have terrible luck in life.

So Apple said renewal after the initial period is not always offered? That’s interesting. I wonder what they base eligibility on? Have you had multiple claims on AppleCare?

My advice is if you know you’re at high risk for damaging this MacBook, is to sell it and get a new one with AppleCare. I went through periods of that with my iPhone where I was super clumsy, so AppleCare was essential.

I have AppleCare on my MacBook Air, but I’ve never come close to damaging it. It’s just a peace of mind thing. If you’re only wanting AppleCare for peace of mind, then you have to determine is it really worth it to get a new MacBook.

I did a quick scan of the AC T&Cs and appears that the Mac in question might have originally been purchase before Apr 19, 2021. T&Cs for it make no reference to renewals. Everything since has terms for yearly, monthly, and "fixed term", where "fixed term" has the "up to Apple's discretion" clause.

So if original purchase before 04/19/2021, seems like no renewal. Anything after, MAYBE can renew "fixed term".

And T&Cs changed on March 5, so more changes there but wrt "fixed term", does not appear anything different.

I think it would bother me if I couldn’t have AppleCare on my MacBook. I know it’s silly, but I love the peace of mind if it stops working I can go down to the Apple Store and say please fix this. My main reason for liking Apple products is the support. I’ve seen some of the hoops my friends have to jump through with non-Apple products.

According to this support document:

The seller has to transfer the AC plan to you. I'm guessing that didn't happen and that's why you weren't offered renewal.

This is good to know about transferring AppleCare.. most of the time people just assume AppleCare follows the device and call it a day
