Is anyone else experiencing buggy behaviour with YouTube when using AirPlay?

If I send a video to the Apple TV with Airplay and then lock my phone, the video stops playing, it then flashes off and on on theTV and sometimes the video player widget appears on the Lock Screen, where I can sometimes press play and have the video resume on airplay.

I used all betas of ios14, but I assumed this was just the usual issue where an app can be subtly broken until the GM release when updated apps start being released.

I'm also seeing this behaviour on my girlfriends phone, and she installed iOS14 only after the official release. I also have the problem on my iPad Air 2 (iPadOS 14).

Yes, same issue here.

YouTube just pushed an update today, it came in when I went to 14.1 which was also released today.

Is it a newer update than the one they pushed out 4 days ago (15.38.2)?

I don't show a newer update than that one.

Ya, what the heck, I just received notification of update today. I don't auto-install because I want to see what is being changed, but maybe comes to different phones / regions at different times?

I have another issue related to YouTube app and airplay in iPadOS 14.

I have an iPad Pro 2020 with iPadOS 14.0.1 installed, and have the latest YouTube app version installed. If I send the audio to an AirPlay speaker, the image of the video goes instantly black, while the audio keeps streaming as I hear it on the speaker. When I interrupt AirPlay I have to reload the video from the start to get back the image.

This doesn't happen when:

  • watching videos on YouTube site on the browser
  • using other streaming apps (Netflix, Prime, Apple TV)

Anybody else?

This happens in my household, too. The YouTube video plays just fine, but as soon as we switch to AirPlay, the area where the video is supposed to be goes black and only the audio plays. Everything else on the YouTube app mirrors just fine (like, recommended video thumbnails, comments, descriptions, etc.). All other streaming apps work normally on AirPlay.
However, YouTube is also strange in that it's the only streaming app that works through our Wi-Fi. All other streaming apps work only on LTE. I don't know why YouTube has to be so different.

In case it makes a difference, I should also note that my parents use the free YouTube app, but I have YouTube Premium.

It turns out that there's a sort of workaround to this issue by tweaking a setting that somewhat works differently (and probably wrongly) with respect to iOS 13.x.
Settings -> General -> Airplay & Handoff -> Send to TVs with Airplay (or the likes): the setting was "Automatic". If I set it to "Never" the image is back on YouTube app, while erratically still disappears when airplaying the audio.

In iOS 13 (on my iPhone I didn't update to iOS 14) no matter what the setting is I have no problem when airplaying the YouTube app audio. In iPadOS 14, if the setting is "Ask" or "Automatic" then the image disappears. The idea is that the image should appear on an airplay TV within the network range, but even if I have an Apple TV, the image doesn't show up there, so it is lost.

For this reason, I positively think that this is a bug on YouTube app, or at least an incompatibility between the app and the new iOS 14, and therefore it should be corrected. But at least there's a workaround, and I can have the video on the iPad and the audio on the airplay speaker.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check when I get home.

It's still very erratic and unreliable behavior. I've probably found an even easier method to workaround it without tweaking the settings.
I've found that, while the audio is airplayed and the image is black, if I swipe up YouTube app and go back to home screen and then I go back to the app, back is the image! This works consistently for me, no matter what the airplay setting is.
