I’m looking for a YouTube app that lets me put the display to sleep and keep listening to a video. I tried one that claimed to do this (the name escapes me right now), but I never had luck getting it to work.

If you pay for YouTube premium the regular YouTube mobile app supports background audio playback. I think it's pretty stupid to have the feature stuck behind a paywall.

Dolphin browser can make it. At least I tested it some time ago and it worked.

The Musi app can do that for free. You can do an in app (once) for 4,49 euro to remove the ads. It has been in the App Store for quite a long time and works stable and has background audio playback and no ads. It does lack Chromecast support. It has been a great alternative for the App that had it all but had to remove their app in the end: ProTube.

Or use a Siri shortcut.

I use one that plays the video from Safari in the background - no mess, no fuss

This app is for music only, right? For example you can’t play a video podcast. I tried using search but it didn’t find the shows I was looking for. If I’m wrong please let me know.

This combined with the fact that I can’t seem to access my watch history, playlists, or subscriptions makes it a dealbreaker.

I disabled Siri from day one, so my experience with it is zero. How would a shortcut work?

You used to be able to, but for some reason Apple removed the ability for Safari, and the YouTube/Chrome (Google) apps of course want you to pay for such a simple 'feature'.

There are still some browsers that let you, to some extent, I think. Play the video, sleep the device, then pull up Control Center and press play.

I may be wrong but I'm not sure if you need Siri enabled to run Shortcuts - try it out!

The one I use basically goes:
  • Open YT video in Safari
  • Open share sheet
  • Select Shortcuts
  • Run the YT shortcut
  • Video opens in new tab
  • Close app/lock phone
  • Press Play in Control Center
Done!

interested too. Tryied Musi - 4/10 , looking for something better.:apple::)

What's the problem with Musi?

The pros for the app:
* it's plays music in the background
* it shows YouTube videos
* you can login to YouTube to see your favorites
* if you pay once you can remove the ads in both the app and around the videos
* no subscription needed

The cons for the app:
* no Chromecast support
* no download option

Where I can download Siri shortcut?
You should already have the Shortcuts app on your phone (it's part of ios 13)

Then take a look at sites like..

Download the ones you want and follow the instructions
