I'm on 6.1.2 JB.

I'd like to be able to load a video on google's Youtube app, play a video, then be able to hit the home button and go on to other tasks, having the audio play in the background. Any way I can accomplish this? (am I missing something obvious?) Do I need a Cydia app to enable?

Yourtube is what you want.

Or mctube is a nice app in App Store that backgrounds and looks great UI-wise.

Protube Extension does this and more.

Yup. I'm a proud owner of the original ProTube and that is the only feature it is lacking!! I have been patiently waiting for the dev to add it. I have no clue if he can/will do it though :(

I don't get why he has an app and an extension. If people are jailbroken they can get his app and it's better because whenever the YouTube app gets updated he usually says don't update, with his app we don't have to worry about that.

When I got his extension I didn't realize there was an app too.

Oh man that's a bummer. That's partly why I always recommend people but the ProTube app instead of the extension. However, the app doesn't have background audio playback. So those are two things one should consider when making the purchase.

Honestly I was pretty confused too when he announced the extension tweak. At first I thought he was abandoning the original app haha. Turns out he was making a separate piece of software. He has made some good stuff in Cydia. I like his work.
