Yup, Got my 17" MBP

Ok, lets start off by saying that this is my first mac. I have been eager to make the switch for a while now and get away from troublesome Windows. Just got my 17" MBP about a half an hour ago via FedEx Express. I love this machine. I knew I would from the minute... excuse me, second I saw it on the Apple website while I was shopping around for a new computer. This was THE one, you know? *sigh* this thing is great... but I think It has a problem. The screen doesn't seem to sit perfectly flush when its closed, its ever so slightly higher on the right side. As a matter of fact... when I close the lid then remove my hand, the right latch pops a little... the left one goes in all the way but the right literally pops a second after closing it... After paying $3400 for this machine... fully loaded, this has to be one of the most depressing feelings I have ever felt in recent memory... I feel cheated. This is grounds for replacement am I correct? Any input would be helpful... it also looks like the arrow keys aren't set right. Am I supposed to be able to see underneath them so easily?

You can see under keyboard keys very easily, but if the latch is going to bother you, call applecare now and ask for a replacement. Do it ASAP, I made the mistake of waiting too long and they wouldn't let me.

God that is depressing... I think I'll see if it just decides to start functioning properly whilst I calibrate the battery. If there are no changes then yea... I'll make the damned call. *shakes fist in the air*

EDIT : Yes I can see under the other keys slightly, but I really don't think I'm supposed to be able to see the mechanism under the keys. The arrow keys are the only ones I can see it on.

My arrow keys are screwed up. The "end" one is even slightly higher than the others. That's normal? Aren't they supposed to be even with the rest of the keys?

Your problem is quite common. Believe me, I've had to send it to repair to fix my crooked keyboard. What did they send me back? A new keyboard with all the right sided keys (eject, enter, right arrow, etc.) CROOKED! Seriously, how does a tech team not realize this before shipping out the laptop back to me.

And yes, I could see the mechanism under the keys on mine as well. I think that's normal on all of them, but consider it VERY poor build.

My advice is that you probably won't get a perfect one back to you, so you'll have to deal with it. Unless you are willing tio part with your machine for a week or two already, I'd say hold on to it. Even then when it goes, I guarantee you it's a shot in the dark to get a decent looking keyboard.

Well, just got off the phone with Applecare. Funny thing... I had to give them my serial number like 3 or 4 times because it "wasn't in the database". He told me to take out my battery and look at the one beneath it, and so I flipped her over and took it out. He put me on hold before I could read that one to him (I guess to confirm that all the ones I gave him were the same, which they were) When the guy finally came back he apologized and said that it will be in there in a few days, how can I help you? I explained my problem, put my battery back in, flipped her back over, and poof the latch is staying in place. So yay. It looks pretty even now. But yea, if anything develops again I'll be sure to call them back and be prepared to send it in. Just glad I don't have to part with it so soon already. Still kinda wary though...

Same thing with my current 15" MBP. It had realy bad gaps, worse than you described. Then, it just appeared to shut great.

There is word that the 17" MBP is able to do right clicks also if you turn it on. I saw it in another thread. Can anyone who has one confirm this?

Confirmed. And it's a BLAST to use. You can either place two fingers on the trackpad and click, or set it up that like a tap, a tap with two fingers is a double click.

Not to mention, if you double click in the middle of a webpage, you get an option to go back or forward which makes browsing that much easier ..

Just returned not too long ago from the nearest Apple store, about an hour's drive away. Yup, the problem has simply disappeared. Both latches stay shut now. The Genius, however did note that the right latch hole is ever so slightly bigger than the other and he even wrote me up a report and gave me a case number in case it decides to act up again. I will be watching it closely in the following weeks. If it does start to pop again, I'll just send in for a replacement. But in all that is good in this world this notebook is by far the best computing device I have EVER owned. My boot time from cold to desktop is 15 seconds. FLYIN! I'm lovin every minute of using this awesome machine, and having TONS of fun learning an entirely new OS.

Overall, felt a little heavier than my 15" MBP (which I sent back, and now awaiting the 17" MBP to be shipped). However, doesn't feel to bulky when carrying it.

No, the screen definitely feels very sturdy, it has weight to it which is good. Who cares if you have to put a little effort in pulling it up. Isn't that the case with most notebooks? I've never seen one that fully opens by itself. Doesn't have a widescreen appearance?!? LOL... This screen is fit for a GOD.
