Zeroing Data from a HD

Hey Guys,

My Hard-Drive has recently somehow corrupt itself (I believe from a power failure) and a simple erase and re-install doesn't seem to be working as the install seems to freeze at certain points each time I try it.

I found a previous topic on google saying that Zeroing all data via the options tab in the disk utilities 'Erase' tab would help to fix all bad sectors etc...

I've already selected this option and begun the zeroing HD option as I am desperate to get this HD up and running again as I really don't want to pay out for another HD and have to battle with the small screws on the sides of my Powerbook.

My question is: how long will this zeroing data typically take for a HD in mines condition?
I just don't want to leave it until 10pm tonight to find out that it should have been finished 5 hours ago, lol.

any idea?

How big is the HDD? How many passes are you doing?


At a guess I would say 3 hours.

i recently zeroed out my 160gb hard drive, and that took between 2 and 3 hours.

The HD I am Zeroing is 80GB using a 10.3 Install disc (Yes, I'm using a powerbook which hasn't been upgraded to 10.4 yet )

I'm getting slightly concirned now because its been running for about half an hour and the blue status bar is currently only 1% of the way, would you say thats fairly normal?

Be patient

As another poster has already mentioned it will depend on the number of passes.

It will also depend on the speed of the machine.

I've just looked back at the machine and it does appear to be moving on slowly, lol.

I just get paranoid that it has frozen xD

Will just leave it to do its own thing for a few hours
