Zevo ZFS System Sold Off to GreenBytes

I notice on the Zevo site it has been sold off. WHAT A SCAM!!!



All the good reports on Zevo saving ZFS and everything they will do and they take your money for the Silver edition then sell the company.

I am sure the new company will use the technology but when you check their website they don't seem to have anything supporting existing users.

Why is it a scam???

One company wanted the technology for their drives and the Ten's Compliment was willing to sell it.

I did not expect much in terms of seeing Zevo come to OSX, other then its usage for external drives.

It was a scam for me because they advertised that Gold would be released within a month (earlier in the year) and that I would only have to pay the upgrade cost from Silver to Gold. Also Silver only ran on one drive so I bought Silver to test it and get ready for the Gold edition. They specifically said that Gold would be released some months ago. So based on this information I purchased two drives and ran Zevo silver on on of them in preparation for Gold.

On your comment, yes it is not a scam to sell a product, but I paid for a product based on their advertisements on their website and they never delivered. That is what I am referring to. They should have been more honest about their product and the fact that they would never release their Gold/Platinum versions.

Zevo provided no option for a test/beta/free download (I am not a Dev) so I purchased it. They specifically said Gold would be released and it wasn't. It is called false advertising when a company sells something based on claims that it can't live up to.

It is called "building up users/clients for the purpose of selling hardware/software/intellectualproperty". You can only sell a product if you have clients/users. Now that Zevo is sold I have a redundant file system (operating App I am referring to, as the drive obviously still works), with no support - nothing.

I call that a scam.

I recognise the right to sell a company but they did nothing (no email... nothing) to let paid users such as my self know about anything. I only found out because I checked to see if Gold had been released.

Anyway maflynn... I am not that concerned. I lost money, but no data. I will rebuild my drives back to HFS+. I was just looking to run ZFS on two drives with Zevo, and they have shut up shop. Disappointing.

Live and learn. This happens everyday in IT anyway.

I still don't think it was a scam, as there is no evidence that Ten's Compliment set out to promise one thing, just to people to send the money and then walk away.

From your post, you purchased and received a product (and a promise of an upgrade path). That does not sound like a scam to me.

I don't want to sound harsh or unfeeling but, this happens all the time. A product is sold and the current customers are left out.

I was expecting that comment. But i would add to that:

They failed on that promise well and truly.

The big question that separates your's and my views on whether it was a scam is whether they knew they could not deliver, and to what extent they knew they could not deliver why they were excepting money. We'll never know that most likely.

Sure you will, sue Greenbytes over it if they fail to honor Zevo's promise. You can then find out all the sordid little details in discovery.

Never buy based on promises. Get contracts signed and buy only what is being sold, not what will be sold eventually.

Never buy based on promises.

A promise is as good as the paper its written. I truly do empathize but I personally was holding off on purchasing the zevo until all the bugs were flushed out and the promised versions were shipping. In my experience, it never pays to be on the cutting edge of file systems - too many things can go wrong.

I found out, by way of ext4 when it was first rolled out. It had a penchant for corrupting data early on. Now, its a rock solid file system, but initially it had some early issues.

ZFS was indrediblllllyyyyyyyyyy slow for me. It took me roughly 40-50% longer to fill a ZFS formatted drive compared to it being HFS+. And deleting files took ages. Deleting ZFS files took almost as long as adding HFS+ files. If you wanted to copy a new chunk of data over the old, you would have to walk away and have a coffee and cake while they are being deleted so you could add the new data (i.e. my drive was reasonably full so I had to delete before adding new data).

I only stuck with it so I had a secondary (actually third) backup of my data.

Oh well. Good luck GreenBytes and I hope you get the system up and running because in principle it was an exceptional system (if it came to fruition).

Source and timeline? "Future" is infinite. I look forward to a post (once GB releases the Gold equivalent edition) proving me wrong, but I suspect I will not receive one until sometime in 2013 or beyond - if ever. Doesn't take away from the fact that they sucked in paid users for the purpose of fattening the intellectual property on the brand and never produced their promised product. All they ever produced was a $2.00 App they sold for $20.00 and never released the promised Gold or Platinum edition. You have to remember they made a very unique promise:

"Buy Silver (which did nothing as it only worked on one drive) for $20 (even though it did nothing and was beta) and when Gold comes you will only pay the difference to upgrade to Gold (which worked on more than one drive)". In other words, one was scammed into buying the product because if you did the math, Silver costs nothing because you wanted Gold so "what they hey" I will buy it now and pay the difference (no loss (unless the company closes down). This is what I refer to as a scam - Their sales technique to bring in paid users to prop up Intellectual Property (for a sale) and never produce anything. I am not referring to the whole Zevo release or potential technology as a scam.

Their committed to ZFS on their (GreenBytes) own systems which is understandable but state:

"With the transfer of ZEVO to GreenBytes, Ten's Complement has ceased sales of the Silver Edition software package that had been available, and it remains unclear how and when ZEVO will be redeployed for OS X by GreenBytes."

I don't see any mention of commitment to future editions of Zevo software? On the contrary? "Shutdown" and "Unclear" don't seem to suggest commitment. And when you note GBs operation they don't seem to be focused on Zevo style software.

I appreciate your post but I gave up with ZEVO a few weeks ago. I formatted the disks back to HFS+ when I did the ML install. HFS+ is twice as fast as ZFS anyway. It took me soooooooo long to transfer 2TB of data and soooooooooo long to empty the Trash. Too much risk in hoping it will all be ok at some point with ZFS. ZEVO is dead as far as I am concerned. Also I don't hear jack from ZEVO about any updates etc. You'd think they would send out an email informing their valuable customers of an update.

"ZEVO Silver still remains supported"? I won't say anything. Cough Cough... I will leave it up to ZEVO to provide that guarantee to their customers.

Sorry for being so negative but I don't like what they did. And nothing I said is untrue, although I recognise it is my opinion. I won't repeat myself as I have already gone into detail above.
